Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 06:20:56 -0600 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5-m ObsLog 20010517 (MJD 52047) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday, May 17, 2001 (MJD 52047) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Steph Snedden (APO) Dan Long (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Alan Uomoto (JHU) - PT Marci Hendrickson (JHU) - PT Scot Kleinman (APO) - PT VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Imaging (with a range of rotator rates) if photometric, otherwise, spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Imaging of 35 N, 36 N in good to acceptable seeing. Imaging of 10 O for UCAC coverage. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We opened at sunset and set up for imaging. We decided to redo the portion of 35N that had poor seeing from last night, from lambda -15 to lambda 22, then continue at lambda 35 and continue to the end of the stripe at lambda 60. This completes 35 N under good to acceptable seeing for this dark run, and also tests the ability of the telescope to handle more aggressive rotator and az rates. We note that we were seeing astrometric residuals of 1 or 2 asec or more for many chips, regardless of whether we were running skippy on 1 or more frames, or were at high or low axis rates, or had good or bad seeing. The skippy documentation says "The astrometric residuals (dmu and dnu) should be less than 1 arcsec for all of the stars. For most stars, the astrometric residuals should be less than 0.2 arcsec. If this is not the case, the solution should be considered suspect." Typical skippy results are appended at the bottom of the log (Skippy details). According to the above statement, *all* of our skippy results are suspect. I'm not sure I believe that. We stopped getting gang transfers at about frame 140. Also, when we tried to start a new drift, the imager complained: May 18 02:19:10 sdsshost IDA 827262 TEXTONLY im is not idle...aborting May 18 02:19:10 sdsshost IDA 827262 TEXTONLY beginData has failed: im is not idle...aborting The imager would not start a new drift. The port was logged out. A readoutAbort was also issued. We also got the following error from id3: May 18 02:18:19 sdsshost TMS 823837 TEXTONLY Waiting for command response from id3 (crate 1, ICC 2), data server (client 1) daqBusy indicated id3 was idle. A new drift was tried, this time it worked, and the gangs started to transfer...??? We are confused. Watcher gave no indication of the id3 problem. We then started 36N under partly cloudy skies to test high axis rates. It was too late to switch to spectroscopy at this point, so we went into engineering mode. We noticed that the focus loop was not running...it was restarted. We were still in focus, so there was no problem. For both 35 N and 36 N, we saw no clear evidence that errors accumulated with higher tracking rates. The skippy results and associated axis rates are tabulated in the data acquisition section below, for both of these runs. 36 N was a short run, so it is hard to draw any firm conclusions about rates and errors for that run. We still need to do a run where we go through a wider range of axis rates. We note that mu error got as large as -9.4 asec and nu error as great as 8.7 asec tonight (and we know we cleared all alt/az offsets). This indicates that we *may* still be dealing with significant pointing errors. These could be related to an inaccurate instrument block for the imager, or unknown x-y offsets. We would like to put the engineering camera back on during shakeup and see if our pointing model still gives low errors. We would also like to check the instrument block for the engineering camera. After this, we can turn our attention to the instrument blocks for imager & spectrographs, checking the centers of plates, etc. We next went to stripe 10 to get UCAC coverage for this dark run. The seeing was poor at the start of this scan, but improved by frame 40, then deteriorated again at about frame 75. This scan might be okay, but the astrometry folks should let us know if more UCAC coverage is needed this run. IOP/SOP v3_45_5 was declared current.
