SYNOPSIS: ========= Delayed by weather until 00:20. Excellent pointing model obtained and tested through variable clouds during the second half of the night. Bottom line is real world pointing of 2.5" RMS! GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Pointing model started a little after 01:00. Errors large enough that occasionally stars fall off chip. Once data was collected and two outliers removed, the a 68 point model with 1.4" RMS was generated. Note the change in AW from -61 to -8. This would seem to indicate that Russell's fix worked. This model was implemented and another 70 point data set was taken as a test of these wonderful numbers. All of the fk5 stars fell close enough to the center of the chip to have shown up on the small guide fibers! Fitting this data set to the fixed coefficients just implemented yielded an rms of only 2.5 arcseconds. This doesn't take into account initial rotator error for a given cartridge, but is certainly much better pointing than we have seen in the past. Details of model implemented tonight. * inmod tdat:telmod DKA300:[TCC.PTERR]PTERR_20010414.DAT;1 T 70 2.0912 IE -190.0398 IA -215.1239 AN -4.4815 AW -61.4021 HWCA2 -0.0109 HWSA2 -0.4545 HNCA1 -0.3801 HNSA1 +1.5785 CA +7.7312 PZZ1 -136.0795 ACEC -2.0400 ACES -2.1883 TX -3.3001 END * getdat PTERR_20010515.DAT;5 Read 68 data points * fit coeff change value sigma 1 IE +5.967 -184.07 0.768 2 IA -41.140 -256.26 0.835 3 AN -2.516 -7.00 0.260 4 AW +53.586 -7.82 0.256 5 HWCA2 -0.026 -0.04 0.334 6 HWSA2 +0.611 +0.16 0.343 7 HNCA1 +0.503 +0.12 0.386 8 HNSA1 -1.796 -0.22 0.388 9 CA +6.011 +13.74 0.631 10 PZZ1 +6.441 -129.64 2.403 11 ACEC +3.439 +1.40 0.456 12 ACES +2.394 +0.21 0.460 13 TX -2.272 -5.57 1.101 Sky RMS = 1.37 Popn SD = 1.53 With the engineering work done tonight, it was felt that the mcp, tpm, and watcher could be declared current as there were no problems taking the pointing model data. All night, the murmur log reported a chronic error message about the syntax of something involving the umbilical. A couple examples are pasted below. High humidity, then clouds and nearby storms kept us closed until a little after midnight. It was variably cloudy after that with west to northwest wind.
