Spectroscopy until moonset. Imaging after, if conditions permit. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== 21:15 Doors open, fans on 21:20 Enclosure off 05:00 Enclosure on, doors closed, fans off One plate finished (538). Good data for two other plates (525, 588). GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Clouds kept us closed until 21:20. Started with spectroscopy with cartridge 3, plate 525. Two problems delayed us getting on the sky for about 10 minutes. First, Pete discovered that a loadCart from the sopGUI had failed because there was a leading zero on the plate number. The real problem was that the leading zero was not visible in the sopGUI window box because the box only shows three digits. Details are included in the "Problems" section below and a PR was filed. The other problem was that startGuider took an image and did NOT return the image analysis or start the PGPLOT window. There were no error messages either; it just hung. Pete believed this was because he had too many windows open on the observer's terminal for the PGPLOT window to open. He closed some windows but it didn't help. Exiting and restarting sop fixed the problem. Details are included in the "Problems" section below and a PR was filed. Large variations in seeing and changes in air temperature made determination of focus difficult. We took 6 exposures but the first 4 all had S/N < 2 due to clouds, moon and poor seeing. The last two are good though. Cartridge 7, plate 538 was finished in 3 exposures. Two were 15 minutes, 1 was 25 minutes. Two science exposures were taken for cartridge 9, plate 588. However, Son-of-Spectro died during this time because /hoggpt/d3 was filled. We attempted to clear some space and then restart SoS. However, SoS kept filling up the disk by reloading the data we deleted. SoS eventually reduced the first science exposure for plate 588 but never made it to the second one. When combined with the previous night's data, this plate may be done but without SoS we had no way of telling. Would the spectro reduction people please check if this plate is done and report back to the observers so we can notify the pluggers on how to proceed. Also, guide fiber 2 on this cartridge is dirty. A precalib was taken for Cartridge 8, plate 594 but due to complications from /hoggpt/d3 filling and SoS dying, no science exposures were obtained. The filling of /hoggpt/d3 also caused problems with the cloud camera. Apparently, no new images from the cloud camera could be accepted. Day crew needs to make sure this is fixed ASAP. This is not the first time this problem with hoggpt filling up has occurred. Something needs to be done about it ASAP. A PR was filed. When closing, we noticed moth guts on one of the altitude drive surfaces. The surface was cleaned with WD40. Also, the orange nitrogen bottle on the PMSS rack was empty this morning. We swapped it with the full one next to it. Can the day crew please swap out the empty bottle, check to make sure we hooked everything up right and check for possible leaks? Finally, due to editing permission problems, there are two copies of the time tracker log (timer.log and timer.log.1). Steph is aware of the problem and is working on it. No error messages, either, it just hung. stopGuider/startGuider again and it happened again. I had a lot of windows open, so I closed a bunch, to no avail. I then exited sop and restarted, and all was well. My guess is that there were too many number of windows on the observer's terminal for the PGPLOT windows to open, but it was frustrating to not get any error message when this happened. A PR was raised (sop/2305). DATA LOGS FROM IOP/SOP: =======================
