SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== High winds and a dust event kept us closed until 02:00. Spectroscopy after that, under very poor seeing. A frustrating night. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We started the afternoon with high dust counts and partly to mostly cloudy skies. We checked the pressure set point in the enclosure to make sure we had a positive pressure difference. The rest of the afternoon checkout proceeded normally. As the winds started to die down, clouds crept in from the south. We were right on the boundary of a wet and a dry air mass and were just at the edge of the clouds. We started with spectroscopy. We opened at 20:50 and closed right back up again by 21:10 as a wall of dust blotted out El Paso, Holloman & us. We pressurized the enclosure again. The dust rose so quickly that the telescope was exposed for a few minutes before we got everything battened down. We reopened at 02:00 with cartridge 9, plate 587. The scale changed rapidly during the first two exposures as the telescope equilibrated. This hampered our efficiency somewhat. The seeing was also quite poor. The 3.5-m reported 3.0-4.0 arcsec seeing, which was what we were getting on the guider. After 5 exposures, we were still unable to declare this plate done. The main culprit here was the poor seeing. We stopped and closed at twilight. We had some DTime errors from the TCC. I've included the TCC messages in the problems section. Note the 1.0 second error for Az. We also uncovered a SOPGUI bug. Details are in the Problems section. A PR was filed (sop/2287). When we went down to close, the laptop showed us the white screen of death and needed to be rebooted. It came back up without problems.
