Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2001 06:25:59 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20010331 (MJD 52000) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2500MM OBSERVING LOG Saturday March 31, 2001 (MJD 52000) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Atsuko Kleinman (APO) Anders Jorgensen (LANL) PT VISITORS: ========= Peregrine McGehee (LANL) Elvis (VEGA) THE PLAN: ========= Science SYNOPSIS: ========= It was another good night for spectroscopy. Five plates were declared done ( 554, 447, 288, 335, 364 ). A good end to the March dark run. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== During the afternoon checkout we got messages from the guider complaining of "allocation failure" when an exposure command was issued. We could not find anything wrong with the way it was working, it responded properly to commands, images were coming back and being put on host. Is there really a problem? We again started out with spectroscopy since the moon would not be down until nearly 01:30. We actually managed to acquire guide stars on our first plate less than 25 minutes after sunset. Red monster found in r1 frames of plate 554. Hand paddle was off. It was also found once in plate 447. It was not seen in any plate once the moon was down. Could it be moonlight triggering the Red Monster warning? No guide star was present in fiber three of cartridge 2 plate 447. The fiber isn't broken, as we could see a similar sky background to the other fibers. It also showed the same intensity as the other fibers in the guiderFlat. SoS complained about not having an arc in the preCalib of plate 288 ( frame 9476 ). The files were there and appeared to be intact. Without the benefit of SoS's wisdom regarding signal to noise on spectrograph one, we were conservative and took four exposures even though spectrograph two's results showed three to be sufficient. Comet Deutsch made its annual appearance, revealing itself at the stroke of midnight right near zenith. We suspect auroral activity masked its presence until then. An aborted smear exposure caused the frame number and sequence number to get out of sync. The folklore hint was followed ( a poolInit in sop), but the discrepancy remained. Since the asmSeqNum was behind by one from the current frame number, we used statusSet to increment the asmSeqNum so it matched the frame number. This seemed to solve the problem and didn't cause any endNight problems, so it has been added to the folklore hint. As there was not sufficient time to set up and finish a sixth plate, we took additional exposures on plate 364 until twilight. It ended up with 30+ (S/N)^2 on all CCDs. We were hopeful that we would see another auroral display like last night. At the start of the night the lines were prominent in the spectro data and despite a relatively bright moon, a diffuse glow could be seen in the NE. Unfortunately it only weakened as the night progressed ( as seen in the line strengths listed along side the science exposures... as was done last night ). There wasn't a repeat of the aurora seen last night, but we did receive a lot of phone calls asking if it would happen again. We also got one call from an excited citizen of Alamogordo who reported seeing Elvis at the Allsups on White Sands. Auroral displays and Elvis in Alamogordo... Coincidence??? I think not!!
