Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 05:47:21 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20010330 (MJD 51999) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 30, 2001 (MJD 51999) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Atsuko Kleinman (APO) Anders Jorgensen (LANL) PT VISITORS: ========= Peregrine McGehee (LANL) THE PLAN: ========= Science SYNOPSIS: ========= It was a very good night for spectroscopy, hopefully not compromised by what turned out to be a very impressive auroral display. Seven plates declared done ( 540, 553, 503, 286, 336, 535, 362 ). It was photometric, err... cloud free all night, but seeing never quite got good enough for imaging and with the strong aurora it probably wouldn't have been good data. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Afternoon checkout yielded an id6-1 drive problem ( random mechanical positioning failure ). The tape was swapped and things worked OK after that. We took postCalibs for 5 540 to complete the set which was taken on 51996 and interrupted before the postCalibs. The altitude and rotator were set to approximately the values during the last science frame ( 9358 ). The values used were alt = 49, rot = 142. Since the exposure was taken in the building prior to opening doors for ventilation, the azimuth was at the stow position of 121 ( which shouldn't matter ). Since it was still daytime, the enclosure wasn't completely dark even with the lights off, but SoS seemed to be happy with the data. We started out with spectroscopy since the moon would not be down until after midnight. The moon wasn't too bright, and the seeing was decent. That combined with clear skies meant we were getting plates done in three exposures consistently. Starting around 22:00 we noticed auroral activity low in the north and east as a faint red glow. A little after 23:00 it became a bright red glow covering the NE half of the sky. It was as bright as it had been earlier when the first quarter moon was overhead. White streaks tens of degrees long somewhat resembling airplane contrails formed and dissipated on time scales of 30 seconds or so, occasionally fluctuating at several Hz! The light show subsided around 01:00, but the sky had a faint red glow for the rest of the night. Spectrosopic data indicates that auroral activity was actually present all night long. In a couple frames taken just after midnight one of the emission lines was saturated ( frames 9432 and 9433 ). Hopefully this doesn't prevent the data from being reducible. For fun, the rough peak pixel values of the bright auroral lines are included for each science exposure in the spectro log. The values correspond to lines located at about rows ( 356, 397, and 1252 near the center of the chip ) respectively. The first guiderFlat for cartridge 7 ( gimg0300.fits ) had something wrong with its determination of position. It indicated a large scale change ( -.04 ) and even with that scale, the star positions were randomly positioned in the fibers. A second guiderFlat ( gimg0360.fits ) showed a large position shift ( presumably to correct whatever went wrong in the first one ). The scale went back to normal and the stars were much better centered. Looking at the two frames showed the second shifted about 4 pixels to the right ( higher column number ) compared to the first.
