Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 05:35:33 -0700 (MST) From: Pete Newman Subject: 2.5m obslog 20010328 (MJD 51997) Apache Point Observatory - SDSS 2.5m Observing Log 2001 March 28 - MJD 51997 PEOPLE ====== 2.5m Observers: Dan Long (APO), Pete Newman (APO) PT Observers: Anders Jorgensen (LANL) Support: Craig Loomis (APO), French Leger (FNAL), Jon Brinkmann (APO) Visitors: None OBSERVING PLAN ============== Science. Imaging as priority, then spectroscopy. OBSERVING SUMMARY ================= Closed by weather until 21:45 MST, then spectroscopy. 3 plates done (337, 534, 367) and 1 partly done (plate 553). We had a rash of software hassles at the start, occasional clouds, and continued strangeness on plate 367 channel r2. Note the counterweight positions for spectroscopy are now ~270, following egineering changes to the fixed weights. OBSERVERS' LOG ============== Snow and heavy clouds kept us closed until 21:45 MST. During that time, we sorted out some MCP and weather data problems (see Problems section for details). We then opened under variable clouds and started spectroscopy, observing: Plate 553, cartridge 1. 2 exposures, not done. The second exposure was lost when Dan's sop command-line window froze (and also froze the sop GUI). See Problems section. Plate 337, cartridge 9. Finished in 3 exposures, with r1 at S/N^2=13.3 and the others > 15. SoS failed to give values for b1 in the pre-cal arc. Plate 534, cartridge 7. Finished in 4 exposures with some overkill on S/N. Plate 367, cartridge 8. Finished in 3 exposures. There were 3 exposures on this plate on MJD 51994. On that night, we noted that the S/N in r2 was anomalously low. No cause has been identified. Tonight, we saw the same low S/N on r2 and the same differences in the distribution of weak fibers in the g' and i' S/N plots. The combination of the two nights should ensure that the r2 S/N is sufficient (and plenty on the other channels), but it would be nice to know why r2 is so low on this plate/cartridge combination. We also restarted the MCP menu on the telescope laptop, as it was responding extremely slowly (up to 30 seconds after a command was given). The sky camera and web-page weather plots were down until ~20:00 after problems with hardware problems associate with marmot were solved by Craig L. We are trying to call it the sky camera in stead of the cloud camera, in the hope that it will ecourage the former over the latter. The second exposure on plate 553 was lost when Dan's sop command-line window froze (and also froze the sop GUI) about 10 minutes into the exposure. The results of the first attempt at starting a new SOP after the old one hung and was killed are appended to this log. It restarted on the second attempt. When he began a new exposure in a new sop window, he was unable to grabInstruments. We continued without grabbing them, but then saw the guider monitor reporting exactly zero efficiency despite there being plenty of counts recorded on all guide fibers. Huh? This noted at 23:25 MST. We then found the folklore entry at http://sdsshost.apo.nmsu.edu/folklore/sop/index.html#sop.01-03-13_07:20:02_UT on how to solve the grabInstruments failure. As in folklore, it was a pgplot process that held UDP port: long 12919860 1 0 22:08:37 pts/30 0:00 /p/pgplot/v5_1_1/dst/pgxwin_server -display long:0.0 Once again: Huh? Killing this process allowed grabInst to continue. A PR was filed (sop/2217). SAFETY ISSUES ============= Nothing to report.
