Imaging as priority, then spectroscopy. OBSERVING SUMMARY ================= Closed by weather until 02:30 MST. Plate 540, 4 exposures, but not quite enough S/N to declare it done. Marmot has a non-fatal hardware fault (see problems section). OBSERVERS' LOG ============== Heavy precipitation within sight at sunset, then snow on site from 19:30 MST. By 23:15 MST, the snow stopped but the skies remained overcast, and there was a thin layer of ice on exposed metal surfaces. By 01:30 MST, the skies cleared and there is no precipitation nearby, but humidity was high so we waited to see which way the dew-point depression (DPD) was going. At 02:15 MST, the DPD was still close to the limit for opening (3.5K), but it was increasing and the mirrors were ~2K above ambient, so we considered it safe to start pre-flight checks and open (thanks to the TPM mirror temperature displays for making this decision possible!). We had time to observe one cartridge with poor seeing (we did not want to cool the primary with the kludge fans for fear of breaching the DPD limits). So, we observed: Plate 540, cartridge 5. 4 exposures, not quite done. As noted in the log last night for this plate, the guide stars were not centered in the guider monitor masks, although the guider was not producing large corrections. The guider reported scale errors of +-0.001, but the plot of S/N vs fiber position suggests a small radial gradient in S/N that looks like a scale error. Note: we used the command-line version of loadCartridge in sop without the -latest option, although for this plate, there is only one plug map. We had a little problem closing, now solved - see the Problems section for details. And of course, after snow at night, the morning weather is GORGEOUS! Craig L. looked at it and will address it during the day. We found the enclosure motors had tripped on over-limits (OL on the LED display) when we tried to open. We suspect this was a left-over from last night, when we closed in a hurry and may have driven the enclosure just a little too hard into the west stops. They reset without a problem. When trying to close, the telescope would not move below ~17.5 deg alt. After some tired head scratching, we noticed the stop button on the north fork had been depressed by the umbilical trunking (again). We told French about this in his morning call, and he will address the problem. Other than that, if anyone can do something about the weather, it will be greatly appreciated 8-) SAFETY ISSUES ============= Nothing to report.
