Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 06:31:00 -0700 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5-m ObsLog 20010324 (MJD 51993) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday, March 24, 2001 (MJD 51993) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Steph Snedden (APO) Pete Newman (APO) Douglas "PT" Tucker (FNAL) VISITORS: ========= Rich Kron (UC) THE PLAN: ========= Science, of course. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Blower & cone fans on, doors cracked: 17:30 (Outside air warmer than inside...waited for the temps to get closer before turning the fans on). Opened enclosure: 18:20 Wal-Mart fans on at 19:42 Wal-Mart fans off at 20:30 Closed at 04:30 We thought we had a chance for four cartridges tonight, as early clouds cleared out some. Clouds came back in at the end of the night, so we only declared three cartridges done. Pete is happy to be back & flying the 'scope again. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== At sunset there was fog to the east of us, but we were in the clear. We did have a significant amount of cirrus approaching from the west, so we set up for spectroscopy. Cartridge 1, plate 551 was mounted before opening and observed for six 15 min. exposures (5 of which have high enough S/N), and declared DONE. We had to acquire an fk5 star to find our field, but we did not need large rotator offsets tonight. The 3.5-m was getting subarcsec seeing, and we were getting 1.8 arcsec on the guider with cartridge 1 (which really isn't too bad for the guider). We turned on the Wal-Mart fans between our first and second spectro science exposures. The temperature difference between M1 and ambient was only 1.2 deg maximum, so we doubted they'd make a difference, but we thought we'd try anyway. They didn't make a difference. We turned them back off. Cartridge 7 was mounted at 21:25. While guiding on our first exposure, the telescope suddenly stopped tracking, although the axes did not abort. It appears to be a problem with semaphore ownership. See the problems section for details. We lost about 20 minutes (reacquiring the field & setting up guiding) because of this problem. The clouds got thicker while cartridge 7 was on, so we got no useful science data. We did confirm that the spectro 2 cameras were still getting half the (S/N)^2 of the sp1 cameras. French was notified of this. Pete suggested we put a different plate on cartridge 7 to establish if its problems are with plate or cartridge. This seemed a most reasonable thing to, so we requested that cartridge 7 be plugged with a different plate. Cartridge 3, plate 334: Mounted at 23:15. Observed for 4 15 min. exposures. Declared DONE. Cartridge 9, plate 532: Mounted at 01:00. Observed for 3 15 min exposures. Declared DONE. Cartridge 8, plate 367: Mounted at 02:40. Observed for three very low S/N (<1.0) exposures, waited a bit for the weather to clear, then gave up at 04:15. Note that we get "axis halted by a problem" errors in the watcher consistently when we issue instChange, although the axes don't halt that we can see. See the problems section. We closed at 04:30, and ran endNight. Pete's IOP session vanished mysteriously while endNight was archiving spectro files, or just after the spectro files. We weren't sure if the TPM files were archived, so to play it safe, we ran endNight again. That's why you may have gotten two emails about tape summaries. The slew completes normally. Does instChange issue a halt? Is this normal behavior? There are also no errors in the murmur log about axes halting during instChange. Where are these messages coming from? If the halt is normal and desired, the watcher shouldn't throw these errors. DATA LOGS FROM IOP/SOP: =======================
