SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== 17:00 start preflight check. 17:30 dessicant was replaced (enclosure basement north wall). 18:30 preflight check end. 22:15 opened. Blower and cone fans on. 05:45 closed. Blower & fans off High humidity and snow kept us closed until 22:15. After that it was clear, but seeing was bad enough that we opted for spectroscopy. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Camera power supply 1 was replaced today and the imager rebooted on its own. After iacking and setting and checking voltages, the u3 chip showed 0 bias level. We ran a bias all night long to see if and when u3 would come back to life. We saved a few screen captures of the biasL voltage. The bias did it's usual bit of ramping linearly down to zero. At about frame 176, the bias ramped up quickly to around 500, then dropped suddenly back to zero. This occurred in the space of 12 frames or so. Some screen captures were saved that show this. They are on 'host in /usrdevel/snedden. They are called u3_01.ps, u3_02.ps and u3_03.ps. We ended the bias at morning twilight with u3 still showing a biasL of 0V. At 17:30 the dessicant at the enclosure basement north wall was replaced. We left the used dessicant in a plastic bag on the lower enclosure workbench. We also noticed that the cartridge elevator works fine today, but French did not fix anything. He said it was running fine when he was here in the morning. It recovered on its own. Worrisome. We setup and switched to MCP v4_6_0 (current version) at the beginning of the night. We had been running a NOCVS version since yesterday. Watcher complained about archiver check_tape for id 5-2. See the notes in the PROBLEM section. Snow and high humidity kept us closed until 22:15. The weather started clearing at about Because the blower had been off (high humidity) and seeing visually looked bad, we chose to do spectroscopy, even though it was rapidly becoming clear. We mounted cartridge 1, plate 548 and were acquiring guide stars by 22:50. After 4 exposures, we declared the plate done. Next was cartridge 3, plate 294, started at about 01:05. It was declared done after 3 exposures. Cartridge 4, plate 496 was next. During the pre-calibs, only 3 of the 4 Ne lamps came on. Replacing the lamp didn't fix the problem (PROBLEMS section). At this point it was too late to do anything with this plate. We note that not all of our site keys open the lower trailer. Could some spare lamps be kept in a cabinet in the enclosure, or on a shelf in the control room? The last plate of the night was mounted...Cartridge 5, plate 499. Two exposures were made before twilight. The plate was not declared done. The manipulator arm brake stopped working for a short while. After removing some snow and ice from the handle, it started working again (coincidence?). Neon Arc Lamp 3: --------------- At about 03:00, during a preCalib, only three Neon lamps came on. The faulty lamp is the one by counterweight 3, nearest the laptop. A replacement lamp was found and installed, but it did not come on either. Mike checked all the connectors and they seemed fine. Later, we put the "bad" lamp in a good socket to see if our problem is with the lamp or the socket (perhaps a relay?). The lamp was fine. The problem appears to be electronic. A PR was filed. Flats: ------ Son of Spectro warned us of Argon lines in our flats for exposures 9087, 9088, 9089 in r2 only. Do the arc and flat lamps have shared electronics? Could these two problems be related?
