Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 07:03:00 -0600 From: "Eric H. Neilsen, Jr." Subject: 2.5m ObsLog 2001-03-15 (MJD 51984) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 15, 2001 (MJD 51984) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Eric Neilsen (FNAL) Mike Harvanek (APO) VISITORS: ========= Alan Uomoto (JHU) Gregg Scharfstein(JHU) Jon Brinkman (APO) THE PLAN: ========= Science. SYNOPSIS: ========= The cloud camera was down all night. A few scattered clouds at sundown, so we started with spectroscopy. Imager dewar 1 power glitched, the +15 portion failing, and we restarted it, and all was well. The imager then glitched again, seemingly dewar 4, but all of the power supplies looked fine. An iack then seemed to solve the problem. The initial plate we tried was near zenith (87 degrees), which caused major problems guiding on it. This plate continues to behave strangely, as two of the guide fibers seem to have a very different focus than the others. The imager glitches again, and an iack doesn't help. Restarting power supply 1 does. Again, it appears that the +15 portion failed. We then complete three more plates. The exposure time for exposure 9027 got misrecorded in the sdReport file and header as 3 seconds, when it was actually 900. A PR has been filed. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== 17:20 We open the doors and turn on the fans. 18:40 Imager dewar 1 power supply clitched. We rebooted it, and all is well. It looks as if there will at least be thin clouds floating past for a while, so we put on plate 542 (cartridge 7). During instrument change, we note that the left part of the rotating floor is slightly beneath the level of the floor of the base of the fork, so that the cartridge jumps a bit as it is being slid under the telescope. 19:00 We open the enclosure. 20:20 - 20:50 The imager glitches again, this time on dewar 4. Looking at the power supplies, they are okay. Jon iacks the camera, and all seems okay... 21:00 We find the guide stars in fibers, but have an awful time getting the guider to get all guide stars down the fibers. It requests very large scale corrections (too large for the telescope to make) and very large rotator corrections. The telescope, however, is at an altutide of 87 degrees! We wait for the field to finish transiting... 22:50 The focus on plate 542, cart 7, is behaving very strangely: the focus values of two of the guide fibers (6 and 9) seems to be very far off of the other guide fibers, including fiber 5, which is very close to fiber 6. We note from SoS that b1 and r1 are getting reasonable S/N, but the S/N for b2 and r2 is poor. A later exposure with fibers 6 and 9 in better focus fails to improve the poor S/N in b2 and r2. 23:00 We move on to post-calibs on plate 542, with r1 and b1 at very high S/N (24.6 and 17.3), but r2 and b2 nowhere near done (S/N of 9.3 and 8.2). 00:15 The watcher complains about all sorts of voltage errors. When viewing the a array of values for the CCD's, however, none of them are red. A vcheck on the camera shows that many of the voltages are indeed flagged as errors. We then try to iack the camera, and get the following results: im> iack Fri Mar 16 00:21:11 MST 2001: BIAS DAC SET CHECK BYTE NOT VALID! \n Fri Mar 16 00:21:12 MST 2001: BUFFER SET CHECK BYTE NOT VALID! \n 0 im> Watcher then starts complaining: Under system/micro: dacs set (ERROR: Mar 16 00:24:08 MST) Under system/imager/ln2: ln2temp We then repeat iack, and get the same results. 00:48 We go power-cycle power the dewar 1 power supply. 02:25 We notice that SoS refused to reduce exposure 9027, complaining that the exposure was too short. Looking at the par file and the header, we see that it was recorded as 3 seconds. Looking at the "scrolling display for 9027, it was clearly more than a 3 second exposure. The header reports the dark time as slightly over 900 seconds. Cleary, we got a good 900 second exposure with incorrect header information. 05:06 The smear taken as sequence 9040 did not look like a smear in the guider image; we do another one.
