SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== 01:30 Doors open, fan on 02:30 Enclosure off 05:45 Enclosure on, doors closed, fan off Night lost to weather and problems. One science frame of plate 496 was taken (as training) but it had s/n ~2. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Clouds were clearing at sunset but high humidity kept us closed until 01:30. We attempted to open at 01:30 but the enclosure got stuck. We called French who came to the site and determined the motor relays in the enclosure control box were confused. He fixed the problem and we finished removing the building around 02:30. At this point, we attempted a test slew but the azimuth axis aborted. Several more attempts yielded similar results. Finally, it was determined that one of the paddles on the doghouse thought it was hitting something. Jiggling the paddle seemed to fix the problem. A PR was filed. We got on the sky around 03:10 with plate 496 but had trouble getting guide stars in the fiber. We tried an fk5 star but it appeared to be horribly out of focus. We tried various focus values from -200 to +500 but none yielded anything that resembled a star. Eventually, we found that we were 1650 units out of focus. We were now able to acquire guide stars in the fibers. Clouds were thickening and twilight was approaching and it was obvious that we would not get any useful data. However, we proceeded anyway and used the time as training. The data was not recorded in the plug plate data base as it had a s/n of ~2 and there was only a single frame. No tapes were shipped. The seeing test was not performed as the telescope was already in thermal equilibrium and there was not enough time anyway. During our focus problems we noticed that the value of abs. focus in tccmon changed abruptly from ~+2500 to ~-1200. This did not seem normal to us. The dessicant in the spectro purge line needs to be replaced this morning as does the dessicant in the PMSS rack (only the right side). The imager dewar was swapped out at 05:45.
