SYNOPSIS: ========= We began by installing new fiducial tables based on data from last night. We then went on to make a new pointing model and install that as well. This worked well for acquiring the guide stars for cartridge 8 (plate 492), but we managed to take only noise through the clouds, and so closed. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Sun Feb 11 16:42:00 MST 2001: Open East door fully, west door 1 foot, turn exhaust fan on. Open cardridge bay, turn on bay fan. Sun Feb 11 17:14:46 MST 2001: Declared the following current: iop v3_29_2, tpm v2_2_2, mcp v4_5_0 Sun Feb 11 17:29:18 MST 2001: Check out of gauges, etc. on telescope. When running a initNight -tapeRelabel, there is a complaint about disk space, and the archiver state (from watcher) is listed as "vrBad" for all id nodes. A goDrift -bias was then started, then stopped. After clearing disk space, we make a second attempt and initNight -tapeRelabel. (This second attempt started at Sun Feb 11 17:36:50 MST 2001). initNight completes successfully, with a "ready for flight", but the watcher still reports "vrBad" for the state of the archived nodes. We then unload all the tapes, and try initNight -tapeRelabel once again. As everything else seems happy, we try and run a bias and see if it gets archived. At Sun Feb 11 18:08:15 MST 2001, we reboot the DA, relabel the tape, and take another bias. Everything works fine now. Rotator scales from last nights fiducial data: rotator scale = 0.02131578884483367 azimuth scale = 0.01401693078832548 It is very cloudy, and the moon will be rising soon, so Steph helps us make and install new fiducalial tables using last nights data so that we can make a new pointing model tonight, proveded we can punch through the clouds. Some work has been done on the engineering camera, and the Paralan needs to be installed. Steph does this. We then install the engineering camera, and rebalance the telescope (counterweights at 95), and reboot the guiderMac. We complete this at un Feb 11 21:08:11 MST 2001. In sop, we do a stopMon, a startMon -simple, and gcam 1. An image shows up. Opening the flat field screen, and taking an image (gimg004.fit), we get a star nearly in focus at focus=0. We take another at a focus of 1000 (gimg005.fit): a nice donut. A third at focus of -1000, gimg006.fit, gives a nice donut as well. We will not tweak the columnation. After experimeting, we decide on a focus of -220. See focus log. Note that the eng camera has 0.15 (or 0.3, if binned) arcsec per pixel. We start dopterr (in the tcc) at Mon Feb 12 04:45:49 UTC 2001, responding with doPause=true, doRetry=true, MaxAltCor=80, NExtraCor=0, SlewPause=2, OffPause=2. To get to the directory in which the pointing grids are stored, log into tcc25m: move ptErr move grid We choose grid file [TCC.PTERR.GRID]GRID_7_7_25_88_T_90.DAT, for 7 increments each in Az and Alt, and Alt range of 25 to 88, and a high randomness factor. We begin with an exposure time of 5 seconds, but change it to 3 (set expt=3) after a saturated exposure to avoid future saturation. The result file is: DKA300:[TCC.PTERR]PTERR_20010212.DAT;1 After removing the first data point, which was a distant outlier, we obtain (and install) the following pointing model: coeff change value sigma 1 IE +1.663 -182.81 1.363 2 IA +1.566 -208.33 1.466 3 AN +0.291 -4.23 0.454 4 AW +0.019 -63.55 0.466 5 HWCA2 +0.262 -0.32 0.638 6 HWSA2 +0.307 -0.74 0.587 7 HNCA1 -0.320 -0.17 0.690 8 HNSA1 -0.875 +0.93 0.702 9 CA -0.399 -0.77 1.133 10 PZZ1 +7.030 -130.69 3.967 11 ACEC +0.946 -2.46 0.808 12 ACES -0.882 -1.91 0.776 13 TX -3.547 -4.79 1.729 Sky RMS = 2.03 Popn SD = 2.39 After we do this, we return to the telescope and put the corrector lense back on, and install cartridge 8. Stars show if in fibers on the first attempt! Seeing is very good. Mon Feb 12 08:15:32 UTC 2001: axis's have halted! gotoField issued again, and the telescope returns to the field. We issue an endStare -abort in SOP to stop this exposure, which is probably bad. Realizing that the "-abort" probably prevented the CCD from being read out, we issue a "goStare 0" to do this. The endStare seems to have stopped the guider.(?) We issue command to stop (just to be sure) and restart the guider. A newly issued doNextScience proceeds without incident, although son-of-spectro complains about the sky background. This is not surprising, given the nearly full moon and cloudy conditions. After several very low S/N exposures, and the clouds getting very dense, we loose our guide stars completely. The satelite map suggests it will only get worse. We close at Mon Feb 12 10:12:41 UTC 2001. As of 4:30, it appears to have cleared back to where it was when we were getting (S/N)^2'd values of 2 or so. It will certainly not be worth reopening tonight.
