Date: Tue, 4 Dec 2001 06:06:20 -0700 (MST) From: neilsen@apo.nmsu.edu (Eric Neilsen) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20011203 (MJD 52247) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday December 3, 2001 (MJD 52247) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Eric Neilsen Atsuko Kleinman (day) Scot Kleinman Ron Rechenmacher (phone) Ron Rechenmacher's mouse (phone) Don Holmgren (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown, beginning with a pointing model ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A pointing model was successfully taken. It appears that the telescope must be refiducialized after each AXIS INIT. We test (and get good data with) bd17smear, but not on bd17 itself. Several minor PRs tested. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The new astroDa, v14_39a, is identical to the old astroDa, v14_39, except for a dependency on a new astroline. A UPS trick was attempted to avoid having to install the DA again, but this caused a bit of confusion, which was eventually sorted out through phone calls to Ron Rechenmacher and Don Holmgren. While we eventualy get the DA installed correctly, IOP remains (innocuously) confused about what DA is running. (oacVersion still returns the old DA version, not the new one.) The offset and focus logTool entries correctly identify engcam as the instrument when it is installed: PR 2702 is fixed. The following text, where the spaces were originally entered as tables: a bc def ghij klmno pqrstu 12345678123456781234567812345678123456781234567812345678 was properly converted to spaces by logTool. PR 2729 is fixed. A 72 point pointing model was taken successfully; the RMS for the model was 1.73 arcseconds. The plot against the old model was informative; the az offset could be clearly seen. The 24 point check model was far off. Examination of the murmur log shows that, in the first few points, it adjusted the encoder positions, and offsets were too large from there on. Further examination suggests that AXIS INITs in the TCC now cause the MCP to reset the encoders by large ammounts, and for the AXIS INIT executed in the beginning of the second pointing model, it reset them by a large amount. See the murmur log around 20:37. AXIS INITs (required for mysterious reasons) executed in preparation for further check models also cause these large encoder adjustments, so we cannot even start. In order to get rid of these adjustments, we must refiducialize from telrun after each axis init: slew somewhere that will cross a fiducial in each axis talk tcc_tel1 "tel1 correct" talk tcc_tel2 "tel2 correct" talk tcc_tel1 "rot correct" While this works, it is time consuming; this is a serious problem! Dan has discovered that, if the TCC already has the semaphore, that an AXIS STOP will do as well as an AXIS INIT at preparing the TCC for a pointing model. Doing this, we finally get our pointing model check; the result has an rms of 2.77 arcseconds. TPM tests (done by Atsuko): PR 2344 closed because it works. PR 2734 closed because it works. PR 2867 --- RHL is to have the final say. ABDump success and failures ---------------------------- We tried ABDump as instructed in the Nov. shakeup plan by Peregrine. ABDump is a command to save interlock status at the time one specifies on the command line. The required test was to "ABDump"using three different time format and then display the interlock status to make sure it reflects the true status at the time specified. We tried the three different time format to make sure they all worked. The first two format worked and then on the third format, we got an error message indicating some difficulty in accessing the archived data to create the dump file. 1st time format: % ABDump 52247 t1.par "2001/12/03 19:21:00" 2001/12/03 19:21:00 Date range: 2001/12/03 10:45:55.121957903 2001/12/03 19:23:52.644648268 This resulted in successfully creating a file t1.par which reflected the interlock status correctly. 2nd time format: % ABDump 52247 "t2.par" "Mon Dec 03 19:21:00 MST 2001" UNIX 2001/12/03 19:21:00 Date range: 2001/12/03 10:45:55.121957903 2001/12/03 19:26:58.317143134 This resulted in successfully creating a file t2.par which reflected the interlock status correctly. We tried reaching Peregrine, but he is out on a meeting. Since this does not impact the survey operation, we will leave the TPM running as it is. PR2788, 2772 was updated with the above info. PR2877 Except for one tmeperature sensor which reports the following: Windbaffle - E - Lower Right -250.11 tpm_TM_M2B3Chans.VALH All others seem to be working as far as I can see. But perhaps Jim Gunn is the best person to ensure all the sensors he requested exists. I see there are some DUMMY sensors as well. Since I don't know how many were expected etc., I think we would like Jim to go over them and close/update this PR. I could not find variables called tmicro_m1,m2,truss in the three www pages that lists the temperature sensors. Are these sensors called something else on the www pages? After the pointing models, we remove the engineering camera and install cartridge 9, plate 412. The automatic instrument change would not allow us to unlatch the engineering camera. The switch was set to remove, the engcam was listed as being on the lift (and blinking) and mounted. We switched to manual and the change went smoothly, except that we had to reboot the guide camera. Initially, the -gflat option on gotoField failed to wait as desired (in PR 2883); this was corrected in v3_64_1, and found to work in that version. PR 2883 is fixed. We then move on to testing testInFiber. Following long Scott's outline for testing fk5InFiber -test we started by putting an FK5 star in fiber 10 and centering up. We then started moving the telescope to higher Dec in 20 degree increments and looking for FK5 stars. There was a systematic Ra and Dec drift as declination was increased amounting to about 3 arcseconds north and east with each move. This offset was converted to calibration ( sticky ) offsets on each move in order to improve the chances of finding the star on the subsequent move. In most cases a change of more than 40 degrees in Dec would put the star too far out of the fiber to tell where it was. We could however make it all the way to 80 Dec from 0 if we moved in 20 degree increments. The good news is that for a given Dec, once the FK5 star was centered in a given fiber, one could offset to any other fiber and the star would be there, maybe not centered, but certainly close enough to be easily pulled in. Below is a table of errors for various places on the sky. Cartridge 9, plate 412 was used. The object offsets are the amount required to center up from the previous pointing. The calibration offsets are the total Obj Offsets " Total Calib Offset deg Fiber Dec RA Dec Az Alt All Plate center 0 0 .0017 .0009 10 0 0 0 .0017 .0009 10 20 2 3 .0008 .0018 10 40 3 2 -.0007 .0026 10 60 2.5 2.5 -.0024 .0027 10 80 3 2 -.0030 .0021 10 0 0 0 .0011 .0007 9 0 -1.5 -0.5 .0008 .0004 9 20 3.5 3.0 .0004 .0016 9 40 3.5 1.5 -.0006 .0028 9 20 Star! 8 20 Star! 7 20 Star! 6 20 Star! 5 20 Star! 4 20 Star! 3 20 Star! 2 20 Star! 1 20 Star! To do the BD17smear test, we start by observing a plate (Cart 2, plate 766) We encounter the exposure / file name mismatch, and correct it by the standard means (from folklore). We finish the plate, but the smear hangs. We notice the following error in the murmur log: Dec 04 03:55:49 sdsshost IDA 127962 TEXTONLY Bad interlock status in smear: {cw {283 .. 281 .. 281 .. 281 ..}} {ffs {0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0}} {ff {0 0 0 0}} {hgcd {0 0 0 0}} {ne... The first attempt at bd17smear died when we responded with an invalid response to a prompt (for hand centering). On the second try the same fiber (8) had to be hand centered again, but we responded correctly this time. The murmur log showed numerous PVT errors during bd17smear, but did not seem to cause any problems (as far as we could tell). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2752 100 O ignore 172.09 -183.81 40 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 12032, plate -9999 ------- 22:08 12032 0.0 bias 01:57 12033 0.0 bias ----- sequence 12034, plate 766 ------- 08:34 12034 0.0 bias 08:54 12035 10.0 flat 08:57 12036 2.0 arc 09:18 12037 901.0 target 09:41 12039 1202.0 target 10:04 12040 1201.0 target 10:27 12041 1200.0 target 10:53 12042 1401.0 target ----- sequence 12043, plate 766 ------- 11:20 12043 240.0 smear 12:18 12044 990.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 19:12 engcam 1007431932 -0.037542 0.000134 0.000000 1.000000 00:05 9 412 1007449552 0.001786 0.000979 -0.008898 0.999820 01:51 2 766 1007455899 -0.001622 -0.000423 -0.014483 0.999980 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 19:11 engcam 1.00000 0 -2427 -200 -40 26.3 3.8 17 203 0.78 00:05 9 412 0.99982 1776 2549 -100 -39 51.0 4.0 14 227 1.5 01:51 2 766 0.99998 198 1225 -100 133 56.5 4.6 22 221 1.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 18:35 38 21 23 210 (SSW) 261 - clear 19:08 38 21 16 198 (SSW) 143 - clear 19:41 40 18 17 224 (SW) 124 - clear 20:13 40 19 11 213 (SSW) 137 - clear 20:45 40 20 14 265 (W) 174 - clear 21:17 40 21 11 252 (WSW) 207 - clear 21:54 40 22 13 241 (WSW) 226 - clear 22:26 40 24 14 230 (SW) 277 - clear 22:58 39 24 16 228 (SW) 267 - clear 23:30 39 24 10 228 (SW) 257 - clear 00:01 39 24 14 231 (SW) 247 - clear 00:33 39 23 15 210 (SSW) 259 - clear 01:06 40 23 17 210 (SSW) 240 - clear 01:39 40 23 21 215 (SW) 183 - clear 02:10 40 21 15 212 (SSW) 187 - clear 02:43 39 21 15 235 (SW) 156 - clear 03:16 39 21 20 228 (SW) 183 - clear 03:48 38 21 20 224 (SW) 176 - clear 04:20 37 21 19 220 (SW) 153 - clear 04:52 37 21 24 216 (SW) 166 - clear 05:25 38 21 20 214 (SW) 132 - clear 05:56 37 22 24 219 (SW) 173 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_64_0 Watcher: v2_13_2 MCP: v5_8_2 TPM: v2_4_5 AstroDa: v14_39a TCC: sdssProcedures: ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0760 0.0710 Axial B 0.8020 0.8030 Axial C 0.0750 0.0640 Trans D -1.4930 -1.4590 Lateral E 1.8580 1.8600 Lateral F 1.4260 1.4280 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
