But only declared 3 done. Clouds, seeing, moon, hour angle kept us from finishing any more. A few problems- two rotator aborts, a misbehaving fsaoimage, but nothing too major. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Clouds rolling in form the SE dictated a start with spectroscopy. First up cart 1, plate 732. The gotoField found two stars on the edges of two apertures. We continue to get azimuth encoder differences reported in the watcher. We finished this plate in three exposures (total 42min) and went on to cart 2 plate 736. We found all guide stars on the initial gotoField. What I am about to write, I already wrote once before, but an IOP accident (to be described) lost my log. I am therefore missing some details now. Sorry. While setting up on cart 2, plate 736, we accidentally issued a 1000s gcam exposure. Not wanting to wait for this to finish before starting the guider, we tried a gcam cancel which just cancels pending requests, not active ones, so there wasn't really much hope this would work. We tried a few more things (setting the instrument block again, ex.) and finally got out of the exposure by stopping and starting the guiderMac software. We did NOT have to reboot or power cycle anything - we just stopped and re-started the software on the mac. While this was going on, I thought I should change the time-tracking category from "spectro setup" to something more appropriate ("observer snafu"?), but seeing as how there was nothing appropriate for this mistake, I decided on "Other software Problem", but when I clicked on it, I just got two very small very empty boxes- one was the time requestor, the other the TCL Error dialog, although neither had any text in them. A look in my IOP window revealed some error message about not being able to find some fonts. I filed a PR (2858) on this, but later found the watcher reported the same missing fonts and eventually "fixed" things by bailing out of everything on my xterminal, and starting over from scratch. I don't know why I had to do this or if there is someway IOP could deal with these vanishing fonts more gracefully (see PR2858). Meanwhile, once we got our long gcam to abort, we noticed the rotator had aborted. I found some error messages from the murmur log I included in the old log, but lost them in the IOP mishap. Actually, I re-found them (my regular-expression studying is paying off...:>): Nov 07 19:17:44 sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_W_trcWarn MGT: bad az amp (0 now 0) Nov 07 19:17:44 sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_E_trcErr MGT: bad az amp; aborting The IOP mishap: while bailing out of everything, I accidentlaly exited my IOP from which I started logTool without first saving/quitting logTool. This resulted in logTool very ungracefully shutting itself down, losing all my changes since my last save. I filed a new PR(2859) suggesting some possible other behaviors in these instances. Clouds got quite prevalent at the start of this second plate (736). End of rewrite. Next up - cart 4, plate 726. We found all the guide stars (on the edges) on the initial gotoField. We didn't quite finish this plate, but we did get a smear in good conditions on it. Seeing, btw, was variable most of the night. Next up - cart 5 plate 749. We did not finish this plate before it got too far past prime viewing time. Next up cart 7 plate 697. We found all guide stars on the gotoField. (We have not been clearing the previous offsets all night.) We didn't manage to finish this plate either (sigh) before it got too far over and it was on to: Cart 9, plate 231, the evil reddening plate. This time we only got 5 guide stars on the initial gotoField. We finished the evil plate, then went to: Cart 8 plate 564. We had another rotator abort during this gotoField (after which we found 2 guide stars only). The murmur reported: Nov 08 03:36:15 sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Intermediate rot fiducial 193.01 deg Nov 08 03:36:16 sdssmcp ampMgt dsc_E_trcErr MGT: bad rot state ABORT_EVENT: ID_ERROR_LIMIT Nov 08 03:36:16 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo rotator no next frame: frames left=8 Nov 08 03:36:41 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo rotator MS.OFF scheduled: 0 Nov 08 03:36:41 sdssmcp TCC dsc_S_trcSucc INIT axis rotator: not running: ABORT_EVENT Nov 08 03:36:41 sdssmcp TCC dsc_I_trcInfo Resetting amp for axis rotator: 4 We didn't catch what the TCC was saying at the time. My fsaoimage was acting up most of the night. I was running it under SOP as a startMon to monitor the guiding. Once, it disappeared, then kept popping up very briefly every minute or so. Later, it disappeared, then popped up on whatever virtual desktop was active at the time. I got error messages like: XIO: fatal IO error 131 (Connection reset by peer) on X server "sdsshost:16.0" after 326 requests (324 known processed) with 14 events remaining. in my SOP window. We didn't finish this plate either (sob). endNight finished successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:58 11643 0.0 bias ----- sequence 11644, plate 732 ------- 00:16 11644 0.0 bias 01:05 11645 10.0 flat 01:07 11646 2.0 arc 01:30 11647 900.0 target 01:48 11648 901.0 target ----- sequence 11644, plate 732 ------- 02:03 11649 723.0 target 02:10 11650 240.0 smear 02:13 11651 10.0 flat 02:15 11652 2.0 arc ----- sequence 11653, plate 736 ------- 02:26 11653 10.0 flat 02:28 11654 2.0 arc 03:26 11655 1500.0 target 03:54 11656 1501.0 target 04:08 11657 722.0 target 04:16 11658 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11659, plate 726 ------- 04:31 11659 10.0 flat 04:33 11660 2.0 arc 05:02 11661 1505.0 target 05:26 11662 1202.0 target 05:54 11663 1502.0 target 06:00 11664 240.0 smear 06:19 11665 901.0 target 06:22 11666 10.0 flat 06:24 11667 2.0 arc ----- sequence 11668, plate 749 ------- 06:38 11668 10.0 flat 06:40 11669 2.0 arc 06:59 11670 901.0 target 07:27 11671 1503.0 target 07:34 11672 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11673, plate 697 ------- 07:43 11673 10.0 flat 07:45 11674 2.0 arc 08:08 11675 900.0 target 08:32 11676 1202.0 target 08:55 11677 1202.0 target 09:02 11678 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11679, plate 231 ------- 09:15 11679 10.0 flat 09:17 11680 2.0 arc 09:36 11681 901.0 target 09:59 11682 1202.0 target 10:22 11683 1201.0 target 10:28 11684 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11685, plate 564 ------- 10:47 11685 10.0 flat 10:49 11686 2.0 arc 11:08 11687 900.0 target 11:37 11688 1504.0 target 12:04 11689 1502.0 target 12:11 11690 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:15 1:732 1005182119 0.004513 -0.000384 0.008993 0.999880 20:26 2:736 1005190019 0.003812 0.001095 0.017510 0.999757 21:42 4:726 1005194537 0.003143 0.000616 -0.008578 0.999717 23:53 5:749 1005202384 0.002812 0.001542 -0.029534 0.999847 01:20 7:697 1005207619 0.002013 0.002141 -0.030601 1.000117 02:28 9:231 1005211684 0.004271 0.002541 0.002162 1.000010 03:59 8:564 1005217194 0.003516 -0.000153 0.002518 1.000240 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4585 Stays: JL4586 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:15 1:732 0.99988 1184 2085 -30 14 68.3 6.1 2 322 gdr 1.5 20:27 2:736 0.99976 2399 3030 -100 -46 63.4 6.1 6 276 gdr 1.4 21:46 4:726 0.99972 2793 3424 -100 -34 41.2 6.2 5 264 gdr 1.7 23:53 5:749 0.99985 1511 2351 -100 281 43.9 6.6 8 280 gdr 1.3 01:19 7:697 1.00012 -1155 170 -100 -61 37.3 6.6 6 314 gdr 1.5 02:28 9:231 1.00001 -99 918 -180 -39 50.3 5.4 4 5 gdr 1.3 03:59 8:564 1.00024 -2369 -938 -150 42 52.4 6.2 5 0 gdr 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 15:41 48 29 8 297 (WNW) 189 - 16:14 48 32 7 284 (WNW) 215 - 16:46 47 33 5 278 (W) 309 - 17:16 43 34 5 291 (WNW) 343 - 17:46 42 34 7 334 (NNW) 371 - 18:18 42 33 11 325 (NW) 313 - 18:50 43 31 8 296 (WNW) 216 - 19:20 42 31 7 284 (WNW) 245 - 20:21 42 32 8 280 (W) 292 - 20:51 42 33 6 274 (W) 297 - 21:21 42 33 3 271 (W) 348 - 21:54 43 31 5 263 (W) 332 - 22:26 43 30 4 266 (W) 349 - 22:58 43 30 6 278 (W) 342 - 23:29 43 29 8 286 (WNW) 296 - 00:01 43 28 9 278 (W) 307 - 00:34 44 25 6 280 (W) 239 - 01:07 43 26 5 303 (WNW) 229 - 01:39 44 24 7 316 (NW) 181 - 02:11 44 24 7 326 (NW) 202 - 02:43 41 24 4 349 (NNW) 204 - 03:16 43 25 5 7 (N) 189 - 03:49 41 25 7 9 (N) 186 - 04:20 39 26 7 19 (NNE) 164 - 04:51 43 25 8 16 (NNE) 204 - 05:21 41 25 9 18 (NNE) 170 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Doors open ~16:30 17:20 telescope opened, fans on, cart 1 plt 722 mounted.
