Imaging if conditions allow. Otherwise spectroscopy. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Never removed the enclosure due to heavy clouds and the chance of rain/snow. Performed some engineering tests in the enclosure with the imager on the telescope in an effort to help Connie diagnose the bad imaging data possibly caused by a faulty power supply. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- During afternoon checkout, Dan reported that it took 3 tries for the normal, nominal az fiducial (at ~120 degrees) to read. However, once it did read, the correction was of normal size (~10 ticks). Two other items from the telescope checkout: the Grade 5 N2 has been sitting just above 500 for a while now and one pressure valve on the orange N2 bottle is sitting at 70 when it should be at 40. Could day crew please have a look at these two items? Jim Gunn called around 17:00 and requested that we change out the power supply on dewar #1 of the imager. He stated that some bad imaging data had recently been found that may have been caused by this power supply. We notified Jon Brinkmann and Larry Carey of the request. After some discussion, Jon and Larry attempted to contact both Jim and Connie in an effort to gain further information. Neither could be reached. The state of the sky and the forecast for the evening indicated that it was very unlikely that any imaging would be done tonight. Thus, it was decided to postpone the swap until the next morning (Wed.). However, we (the observers) were briefed on both procedure and location of the proper spare power supply in the event that the sky started to clear. Connie called later (~19:00) and provided additional information. She was also of the opinion that the swap could wait until the morning. Connie looked at the data in the pool and found evidence of the bad data to which Jim had referred. She reported that runs 2710 and 2711 had a ringing in the background but other runs from the same mjd (52225) appeared ok as did the biases on the following two days (runs 2712 and 2713). She called us back and requested that we mount the imager and take a bias under similar conditions (positions and tracking rates) to the runs (2710 and 2711) where the bad data were seen. Since we were closed because of heavy clouds and possible rain, we agreed to perform the test inside the enclosure. We got the starting time and starting lambda for 32 S (run 2711) from the log on 52225 and plugged them into scanstripe. From the output of scanstripe we got the alt position and what we believed was the rotator position (a parameter called angle which followed the RA and DEC). We then plugged the necessary info into stripeaxisrates and got the max values for the alt and rotator rates. We then set the telescope to these alt and rotator positions and used the mcp to move the telescope at the proper alt and rotator rates and took a bias for 53 frames. There was no evidence of ringing in this bias. We contacted Connie and she was still of the opinion that the power supply swap should wait until tomorrow and thought that there may even be more tests to conduct tomorrow with the suspected bad power supply still in place. While we were installing the imager for the above test, the spectro dewars had called for LN2 and the watcher was notifying us of this problem when we returned to the control room. The fill hoses were immediately reconnected and the dewars filled but both CCDs on sp2 (ccds 2 and 3) warmed up to -20 C before cooling down again. During this partial warmup, we got the following error from the watcher: Camera cooling/heating but not scanning (-50.00: Nov 13 22:26:52 MST) At this point, an iack was performed on both sp1 and sp2 and the problem did not return. Although the enclosure doors were opened and the fans were turned on at 16:00, heavy clouds prompted us to keep the enclosure on. We finally shut the doors and turned off the fans at 20:45 when Pete noticed what appeared to be verga off to the west, and indeed, the rain sensor did go off a little after 21:30. It snowed lightly around 01:30 and again around 05:00. We never removed the enclosure. We ran endNight -doTpm and recycled the tapes. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2713 100 O ignore 96.65 98.39 26 2714 100 O engineering -164.96 -32.12 61 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:33 11757 0.0 bias ----- sequence 11758, plate 721 ------- 00:57 11758 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: none Stays: none ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 15:24 51 19 15 248 (WSW) 207 - mcl 15:54 47 20 14 212 (SSW) 224 - mcl 16:25 46 21 15 222 (SW) 295 - mcl 16:56 45 21 18 212 (SSW) 415 - mcl 17:27 44 20 18 199 (SSW) 233 - mcl 17:57 44 20 14 214 (SW) 210 - mcl 18:27 43 19 11 221 (SW) 191 - mcl 18:57 44 20 14 204 (SSW) 147 - mcl 19:29 44 20 12 212 (SSW) 170 - mcl 20:02 44 21 10 221 (SW) 150 - mcl 20:34 44 21 15 220 (SW) 199 - mcl 21:06 43 18 7 241 (WSW) 256 - mcl 21:38 42 20 6 272 (W) 196 - sprinkles 22:10 42 20 9 199 (SSW) 180 - mcl 22:42 42 18 9 261 (W) 232 - mcl 23:15 41 18 16 247 (WSW) 209 - mcl 23:47 41 19 7 261 (W) 175 - mcl 00:19 41 21 16 222 (SW) 157 - mcl 00:51 41 21 11 218 (SW) 230 - mcl 01:23 39 21 11 217 (SW) 247 - snow 01:56 39 24 18 212 (SSW) 199 - mcl 02:28 38 24 15 203 (SSW) 245 - mcl 02:58 37 23 8 249 (WSW) 267 - mcl 03:28 35 25 8 283 (WNW) 309 - mcl 03:59 33 27 14 307 (NW) 274 - mcl 04:30 33 27 5 341 (NNW) 327 - mcl 05:01 32 28 9 318 (NW) 224 - snow [pmt]cl = partly, mostly, totally cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 16:00 Doors open, fans on 20:45 Doors closed, fans off (heavy clouds) Telescope stowed at 30 degrees with cartridge 2 (plate 721) mounted.
