Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 05:02:27 -0700 (MST) From: prn@apo.nmsu.edu (Pete Newman) Subject: 2.5m obslog 20011112 (MJD 52226) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday November 12, 2001 (MJD 52226) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Mike Harvanek, Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science: imaging until moonrise (04:33 MST), otherwise spectroscopy. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Spectroscopy under variable cloud until 00:05 MST, then closed by heavy cloud. Two plates finished (when combined with earlier exposures). Good data on two more. No hardware problems, minor software problems easily overcome. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Overcast thin cirrus from before sunset, so we started with spectrography. Seeing started around 1.5", improving to 1" (as measured on the spectro guider). We had a couple of hours of almost cloud-free sky between 23:00 MST and ??:?? MST, but could see a large weather system approaching onthe satellite images, so chose to stick with spectroscopy. Heavy cloud around 00:05 so we closed. We gave up at 04:25 MST with continuous cloud on satellite images. During afternoon checkout, Dan had a strange iop error from goDrift. See problem section #1. At about 17:55 MST, everyone's watcher hung, not refreshing their windows for a few minutes. Those running on sdsshost recovered first, then those on sdss-commish. Watcher continued to be very slow for most of the night, curiously getting much faster after we closed (the amps were left on but stop buttons were in). At 19:30, we got some file-open failures from MCP (see problem section #2). These repeated later. We believe this is a known problem. We have the bizarre case that the MCP says the fiducial error on altitude was around 3500 and around 40 ticks at the same time. See problems section #3 for the relevant messages. This was most annoying as it tripped MCP/misc errors in watcher. PR/2875 raised on MCP. We saw -1 sec axis DTime errors on altitude (at 22:50:17) and azimuth (at 21:29:28). We made a work-round for the lights on the 'old' lift control paddle by installing heavy black tape over the lights such that it can be peeled back when in use. This is much easier to do than trying to reconnect the Burndy plug in the dark each instrument change. Observing sequence: Plate 721, cartridge 2. Not done, but good data. Stars seen just off fiber on first gotoField with last night's offsets. During the first exposure, Mike's fsaoimage got messed up. Starting a new one triggered the UDP port problem (PR2217), from which we recovered with the folklore prescription. No data lost: the telescope continued tracking and integrating while we resolved the problem. Second exposure was poor due to thicker cloud. SoS failed to report reduction for camera r1 for exposure 11736. We removed the corresponding files from sos:/data/spectro/52226, and SoS re-copied and reduced the data ok. We obtained a smear under conditions typical of the science exposures (partly cloudy), but ran off the design time range for the plate. Plate 726. cartridge 4. Done in 1 exposure (combined with expopsures from earlier nights). Stars found on gotoField. We needed (S/N)^2 > 3 to complete this plate. During the first exposure, we received a watcher error on altitude axis fiducial corrections being too large (off by 3565 ticks). Checking back through the murmur log (see problems section #2) we found this had been occuring since shortly after the fiducials had been found to be ok during preflight checked. We were also misled by the watcher crying "Wolf!" in the MCP section because of the 'took 2 attempts to read the MEI' and 'encoders differ' warnings. We look forward to the fixed in MCP v5_7_3. Plate 749, cartridge 5. Done in 2 exposures. Stars found on gotoField. Excellent seeing. We needed (S/N)^2 > 6.5 and got it, plus an additional smear as the one take earlier was exposured well after the design time range. Plate 697, cartridge 7. Not done in 3 exposures (3rd was useless). Stars found on gotoField. Lost guide stars to rapidly thickening clouds at 00:05 MST. No smear taken (no stars to smear!). ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2712 100 O bias 102.76 113.58 30 Doghouse, wrong flavor ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 11730, plate -9999 ------- 22:55 11730 0.0 bias 00:58 11731 0.0 bias ----- sequence 11731, plate 721 ------- 20.4 8.9 22.1 14.1 01:34 11732 10.0 flat 01:36 11733 2.0 arc 02:07 11734 1201.0 target 02:35 11735 1501.0 target 03:03 11736 1500.0 target 03:31 11737 1501.0 target 03:42 11738 240.0 smear 03:44 11739 10.0 flat 03:46 11740 2.0 arc ----- sequence 11731, plate 726 ------- 7.6 4.8 6.5 4.9 04:10 11741 10.0 flat 04:12 11742 2.0 arc 04:41 11743 1202.0 target ----- sequence 11731, plate 749 ------- 12.4 9.6 11.7 10.3 04:56 11744 10.0 flat 04:58 11745 2.0 arc 05:19 11746 900.0 target 05:37 11747 901.0 target 05:43 11748 240.0 smear ----- sequence 11731, plate 697 ------- 6.7 5.7 11.9 10.8 05:59 11749 10.0 flat 06:01 11750 2.0 arc 06:22 11751 901.0 target 06:51 11752 1501.0 target 07:15 11753 1201.0 target -------------- USELESS EXPOSURE 07:18 11754 10.0 flat 07:20 11755 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 19:19 2 721 1005617972 0.003586 0.001856 0.006127 0.999790 21:26 4 726 1005625585 0.003586 0.001856 0.006127 0.999760 22:22 5 749 1005628938 0.006141 0.000933 -0.022397 0.999760 23:16 7 697 1005632205 0.005285 -0.000286 -0.019406 0.999900 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4650 Stays: JL4651 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 19:19 2 721 0.99979 2073 2803 -100 -5 48.2 7.0 12 187 spec 1.5 21:26 4 726 0.99976 2369 3048 -125 -34 41.3 8.1 10 180 spec 1.5 22:21 5 749 0.99976 2369 2968 -150 -63 58.3 7.6 8 183 spec 1.1 23:16 7 697 0.99990 986 1839 -150 -31 53.1 7.5 11 205 spec 1.2 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 15:48 50 25 11 241 (WSW) 300 - Overcast cirrus 16:20 48 28 9 259 (W) 442 - " 16:53 46 27 10 214 (SW) 376 - " 17:25 45 26 10 217 (SW) 355 - " 17:57 45 26 9 210 (SSW) 333 - " 18:28 45 27 10 215 (SW) 420 - " 19:01 44 28 9 183 (S) 445 - " 19:33 45 26 12 184 (S) 483 - " 20:06 45 24 9 184 (S) 388 - " 20:38 46 16 12 187 (S) 200 - " 21:10 45 17 9 179 (S) 221 - Part cirrus 21:42 46 15 9 181 (S) 173 - " 22:15 45 18 10 186 (S) 272 - clear 22:47 45 18 9 184 (S) 204 - clear 23:19 45 18 9 211 (SSW) 312 - Overcast cirrus 23:51 45 13 14 239 (WSW) 101 - Thick 00:25 46 16 12 266 (W) 146 - " 00:56 46 18 11 266 (W) 133 - " 01:28 45 18 10 266 (W) 136 - " 02:00 45 17 9 222 (SW) 145 - " 02:33 45 16 11 224 (SW) 127 - " 03:05 45 21 9 245 (WSW) 132 - " 03:37 45 19 14 217 (SW) 113 - " 04:10 45 18 13 237 (WSW) 112 - " 04:41 45 18 14 207 (SSW) 96 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 16:30 Fans on, doors opened. 17:30 Enclosure off. 00:35 Enclosure on, fans off.
