How's that for some good news?! French's and Jon's presence apparently had a calming influence on hardware problems of recent days. There were very thin high clouds coming and going all night, enough to keep it from being photometric but not enough to knock back throughput significantly. =========================================================================== SoS sluggishness: For the last two nights SoS has been sporadically slow, sometimes taking nearly an hour to reduce the preCalib arcs, other times it reduces the exposures in less than 5 minutes. The red side seems more prone to the slowdowns than the blue. It resulted in two occasions having us take an extra science exposure that wasn't really necessary. Also a couple of times we took postCalibs we didn't need as it hadn't finished the processing of the science exposures before the smear was done. Later when time was more of an issue we were not doing the postCalibs unless it had already asked for them. On one plate which was two science frames behind in the reduction at the time of instrument change, we had already changed to the next cartridge when it asked for postCalibs. With all the emphasis on improving efficiency it is worth noting that we spent the better part of an hour taking exposures we didn't need and in one case didn't take an exposure we did need because the reductions were running so far behind. We didn't recall SoS being quite so variable in its reduction times prior to this dark run. Has something changed? =========================================================================== Guider Difficulties: PR 2802 19:25 Guider stops guiding ( but continues taking frames ) after a scale change shifts the stars sufficiently that centroids are only found for fibers 10 and 11. We had the same guider failure as last night. The stars were offset enough in the fibers that it was only finding the star in fibers 10 and 11. It kept taking guider frames and not doing any offsets. It wasn't complaining that it couldn't calculate the offset. First, it should be able to center in x and y with only one fiber having a star centroid. Second, if it can't calculate offsets for some reason, the guider should complain. Third, I don't recall seeing this behavior before, so maybe something has changed in the guiding software? If so, what and why? =========================================================================== SOP instChange stutter: PR 2803 21:15. Mike's SOP stopped talking reliably to the mcp. The instChange command failed several times( at the telescope I thought he was reissuing upon seeing it fail. later found this was not the case ). Az and Rot aborted and restarted several times before it got there. The last time, I issued an axis init from the TCC and the slew completed without issuing a TRACK command. After the change was done Mike issued a gotoField -gFlat. The telescope slewed and got as far as closing the flat field screens and attempting to turn the lamps on. The lamps did come on but the sop session kept scrolling mctgpPut SYSTEM.STATUS and saying 0 lamps were on. I could turn on and off the lamps and see the status from my sop. At this point Mike quit his sop and restarted. Mike only issued one instChange command to his sop window, but the murmur log showed his sop session issued no less than 4 of them. =========================================================================== Apparent guider/rotator glitch 22:16 PR 2804 It's not clear whether this belongs as an MCP or SOP PR. However with the max acceleration errors and bad PVTs it seems like it is more likely originating deeper in the telescope control system rather than just a reaction to a relatively large rotator offset, so I'm starting this out as an MCP PR. It applied an enormous correction in rotation which put many stars off the fibers, but recovered in subsequent integrations. It's not clear whether this is in response to a rotator glitch or the guider causing problems by sending a large offset to the rotator. TCC log on galileo 1003292106.382 0 7 > Started; Cmd='offset object -0.0006430,0.0000924' 1003292107.051 0 7 > Started; Cmd='offset rotator 0.0300000' 1003292107.541 0 7 > Started; Cmd='offset object 0.0000000,0.0000000' 1003292108.031 0 7 > Started; Cmd='offset rotator 0.0227951' If the time stamps are consistent the TCC's large rotator offsets come about 70 seconds before the max accel errors in the murmur log...??? The mcp log output for the time between 1003292100 and 100 seconds later, shows only move and status commands. I'm not sure what I would be looking for here, but certainly don't see any obvious error messages. It's a little too long to include here. With the time stamp one can easily grep the log for details. murmur log Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_W_trcWarn addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: -277/1000 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_W_trcWarn addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: 277/1000 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_W_trcWarn addoffset: Max accl. for rotator exceeded: 320/1000 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: jioff = 0.853359 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 8 -- Bad PVT: p = 193.132 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 8 -- Bad PVT: poff = -0.000382234 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 8 -- Bad PVT: v = -0.00607602 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 8 -- Bad PVT: voff = -0.0149338 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 8 -- Bad PVT: a = -4.3984e-07 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo throttled 8 -- Bad PVT: aoff = -0.277342 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: p = 193.131 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: poff = -0. 00145782 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: v = -0.00607605 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: voff = -0. 0277342 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: a = -4.3912e-07 Oct 16 22:16:14 sdssmcp tmRot dsc_I_trcInfo Bad PVT: aoff = -0. 234674 plus lots more.... =========================================================================== Az fiducials: Started losing fiducials in azimuth around midnight. With French and Jon around the fiducials decided to behave better tonight. =========================================================================== saoImage Port Thievery: saoImage port thievery at 02:10.
