Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 07:03:27 -0700 From: "s. a. snedden" Subject: 2.5-m Obs log 20010105 (MJD 51915) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 05, 2001 (MJD 51915) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Mike Harvanek (APO) Steph Snedden (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) Atsuko Nitta Kleinman (APO) Anders Jorgensen (LANL) - PT VISITORS: ========= Robert Lupton (PU), Jim Gunn (PU), Connie Rockosi (UCh), Mike Carr (PU), Scott Burles (FNAL) and David Schlegel (PU). THE PLAN: ========= Shakeup. Some late night spectroscopy, shakeup tasks permitting. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Lots of IOP/SOP shakeup. Some software installs. Two plates finished that had been observed earlier in the dark run. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Jim, Connie and Mike C. continue their work on the imager. Now that the imager is in the clean room, and the leaky dewar exposed, they have run more leak tests. The leak appears to be intermittent, which is troublesome. The following Shakeup tasks were accomplished: Installs: ========= IOP/SOP v3_24_0: ---------------- Scott B. installed the latest IOP/SOP with moral support from RHL. Current version is still v3_23_2. The latest version was used for the bd17smear tests and spectroscopy done tonight. TccMon v1_5: ------------ Installed and declared current. The absolute focus is back and working. The procedure for installing tccMon was added to the software installs page in sdssProcedures. TPM v2_2_0: ----------- Peregrine installed this latest version. v2_1_6 is still current. We switchTPM'd to the latest version. The following M2/Truss sensors show values of -273.16C: Block 0, sensors 4-7 Block 3, all Block 4, all Does this agree with the sensors that you know are not hooked up? *The temp graphics legend is corrected. *The icon is now "chiller inlet" instead of "chiller outlet" *The PMSS interface display works as advertised. sdssProcedures: --------------- v1_5 was installed. There are some changes to documents that got misplaced when branches were created earlier. We have not tracked down all the changes that were lost, but they will be added to the main line as we find them. This will be a shakedown task. Tests: ====== The following tests are all IOP/SOP related. IOP/Server mismatch: -------------------- Eric has written a change to IOP to warn of a mismatch between IOP & Server versions: It works just fine and says: WARNING: Server master is not run under this version of IOP! WARNING: Server spectro is not run under this version of IOP! When the versions match (after restarting the servers under the latest IOP), we don't see the warning, so this change works. "ForLog scripts": ----------------- The "ForLog" scripts Eric wrote are now included in v3_24_0 of IOP/SOP and work well. They were used for the mirror stats, focus log, spectro offsets and spectro exposures log in this log. GuiderFocus Defaults: --------------------- Eric has set defaults to the guiderFocus routine so that now all you need to do is enter "guiderFocus ". The number of focus steps defaults to 7, the increment to 50, the exposure time to 10 and the FWHM guess to 2.0. These values should work well a good fraction of the time. They worked well tonight. Under very bad seeing, you may need to use longer exposure times, larger focus increments and larger FWHM guesses. EndNight: --------- Eric has also set endNight to default to the current MJD. This was tested tonight and ran without bugs. InstChange: ----------- Scot debugged instChange and it is ready to install. The default instChange does an axis init (or you can type -init if you want to be absolutely sure) before moving the telescope. There is also a -noInit option. Both were tested and found to work, sort of. Axis inits would clear brakes and reset the amps, although most of the time the brake would come right back on in az or alt, and you would have to re-issue the instChange again. We are not sure where these problems with the brake coming back on again are coming from. Perhaps the problems are mechanical, and the brakes don't clear in time...we are not sure. Eventually the brakes will clear and stay cleared if you axis init enough times. A PR will be filed when the Princeton site is back up, asking to have the brakes checked. The software changes still need to be checked in and installed, unless Scot did this while I wasn't looking. WatchTCCSlew: ------------- watchTCCSlew was debugged by Scot and tested succesfully. The changes are checked in, but will need to be cut during shakedown. bd17smear: ---------- Scott B. worked on improving his bd17smear code. Progress was made, but there are still some problems. The star does not appear in all fibers, and the farther you are from the center of the plate, the more likely it is that you won't get the star down the fiber. It is possible that the problem is in the applied Dec offsets, but it is not certain that this is the cause. Science: ======== We took advantage of the moonless last few hours of the night to finish two plates that had been observed during the dark run, but not finished. Plates 453 and 494 were declared done.
