THE PLAN: ========= Science. Spectroscopy (Imager unavailable). SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Plate 488 done. Some very moony data for plate 411. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Jim, Connie and Mike C. arrived about 17:30 and began working on the imager which was mounted on the telescope. They finished around 19:00. We removed the imager from the telescope, installed a cartridge and were open by 20:00. Sometime between 18:00 and 19:00 we lost the ability to communicate with both sets of cameras on the spectrographs. The error message in SOP said something like "cannot communicate with cameras". We checked the Xyplex and found it to be ok. Rebooting the VME crate solved the problem. After observing a plate for 45 minutes, it became apparent that the moon was too bright for us to obtain decent S/N values. So, we decided to test the BD17smear procedure with the help of Scott Burles. BD17smear is not yet in its final form but is working better now that Scott increased the wait time between guider images. This prevents the guider from taking images before the telescope is finished moving. Scott also wrote code to make the rotator offsets "sticky". This will be tested tomorrow. We also verified that endStare works (it ends a spectrograph exposure and closes the shutters). Note that much of the sdReport-51914.par file is wrong. An early exposure (8145-8147?) did not terminate properly and the remainder of the file is fouled. There also appears to be some problems with later files (e.g., 8155-58?, 8163?). We believe the listing of frames in the data acquisition section below is correct but please use with caution. We also encountered a problem in SOP. While in the midst of a doNextScience exposure, we accidentally up-arrowed, then hit return in the SOP window which tried to start another exposure. SOP did the right thing and timed this request out because it knew another exposure was in progress, however, after the exposure ended normally, SOP was left in a very confused state. The SAOMon disappeared and guiding stopped and would not restart. SOP had to be restarted to get guiding going again.
