THE PLAN: ========= Science. Spectroscopy (Imager unavailable). SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Smoke from a controlled burn during the first half kept us off the sky. Cartridges 8 and 2 completed and declared done. More exposures also for cartridge 4. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We completed the afternoon checkout, walk-through and setup and were on-sky by the end of twilight. Bright moonlight kept the S/N of our spectra low on cartridge 4. We mounted cartridge 9 and acquired our field then had to close because of a climbing particle count. We closed by 20:10. As we were closing we could smell wood smoke. A phone call to the USFS confirmed our suspicions that we were picking up smoke from a controlled burn near Cloudcroft. It took until after midnight, when the wind shifted again, before we could reopen. By 01:00 we were back on the sky. Cartridge 4, plate 394 observed for 2700 s with very poor S/N Cartridge 8, plate 469 declared done in four exposures (3600s). Cartridge 2, plate 274 required a large rotator offset before we were able to guide (see offsets below). Observed for 5400 s and declared done. We had a Son of Spectro problem (see problems section). A note to Lynn & French...the guide fibers on cartridge 2 looked much cleaner tonight. Thanks for cleaning them. It made a difference. No more sneezing on fibers, everybody. We followed the troubleshooting recommendations in the Son of Spectro documentation, and all seemed well. The red spectrograph data was reduced with no delays or problems. We think Son of Spectro may have choked on the arc frames, and then not been able to process anything else. We looked at the arc frames and they seemed fine, so we are not sure what is the root of the problem. A PR was filed.
