Imaging if possible. Otherwise spectroscopy. Observer training. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Some marginal data for plate 412. Observing training. Some calibration and engineering. Clouds, wind and high humidity. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== During afternoon checkout, there was a problem with id3-1. All lights on the drive were lit at the same time. We followed the trouble shooting procedure to recover a single tape drive. We ended up pulling the plug and the drive recovered. Incoming clouds delayed opening. We swapped the imager for a cartridge. A check on the balance showed a shift in the proper counterweight setting for spectroscopy from 280 to 240. A hole in the clouds passed over and we got on the sky with the high s/n plate 412. By the time we got to the science the plate had passed its prime, but with marginal conditions and heavy clouds not far off we decided to keep this plate on, do some observer training and get what we could. The data obtained were marginal. The clouds were patchy enough to keep working and so we tried another high s/n plate, 483. The guider flat at the beginning looked like a bias and at first we thought we had a communications problem. We rebooted the Mac and cycled power on the guider but the problem remained. Next, we suspected the guider camera shutter. After a phone call to Dan Long we were able to rule out the shutter as the problem by cycling power on the guider and hearing the shutter open and close. We then removed the cartridge and Atsuko found that the black foam rubber padding for doing dark frames had been left in the cartridge. We removed the padding and got back on the sky but the clouds were too thick to work (guide stars barely visible). We closed. After we closed, we decided to take a bias with the imager to make sure the id3-1 is really happy and will not give us errors. While taking this bias in the dog house, we copied a frame from all chips to /data/scratch/ank/51936 for Jim and Connie. In this directory there is also a bias frame taken in the afternoon while the imager was on the telescope. While there were message about which files was being copied over, we tried to endDrift in the same window the messages were scrolling. This, of course, makes it difficult to see what one is typing and also when typing backspace, it gives you garbage characters. After trying it few times, trying direct typing and using arrow keys, we opened another iop window to issue an endDrift. Unfortunately, by then, we seems to have typed several "getAllFrames" command since we saw the same files being copied over and over to the same place -- overwriting the files. Then we also saw a bias run start up which we ended immidiately (this happened couple times). The files were still getting copied over and over, and no cntrl-c would help, so we logged out of this iop window completely in hopes that this will stop the copying of files. And then we saw "exec boot" and "phase boot" message! The watcher said all VME nodes were "dead". We then checked the vdd voltages and found they were 15V. We therefore used Connie's new command "setImagerAmpsOn" and checked the vdd voltages were back to 24V. We issued iack, and then tried another bias run. It ran fine and no watcher errors showed up for the VME nodes. High wind and humidity warnings were issued by watcher during this time but we were already closed. After this, we took some calibrations for plate 284 that were missed two night previous because of a high wind closure. We moved the telescope to the alt and rot positions where we would have been if we were actually taking data (as instructed) and acquired 1 flat and 1 arc. Son-of-spectro said the calibs were good. We hope they can be used to calibrate the data from two nights earlier. We also took some calibration frames to investigate the "argon lines" problem (PR #1859). We took a 2s (arc), a 10s (flat), and a 900s (science) exposure with the flat field screens closed and the lamps OFF (as requested). These frames were taken at the same alt, az, rot position as the calibs for plate 284 discussed above. So, the calibs for 284 can be used as a "lamps on" comparison for the PR #1859 frames, if needed. After endNight had completed, we got some archiver errors and a vme error from the watcher that we did not understand. We cleared the errors and they did not return. See the Problems section below for details.
