Imaging if possible. Otherwise spectroscopy. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Stripe 86 N - engineering, poor seeing, not photometric Stripe 35 N - acceptable to good seeing, a very few scattered clouds Stripe 12 S - marginal seeing, a very few scattered clouds Stripe 35 N - poor seeing, no science frames Plate 284 - not declared done GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== When opening up this afternoon, the west door opened about 4ft and then stalled. Hitting the open button again and turning the key failed to open it. Closing it all the way and then re-opening it seemed to solve the problem. A PR was filed. The M2 status bits checked out fine again: 00065537, 00065537, 00065537, 00065537, 00065537 status word OK The M2 galil status remained good all night. CCD 33 seemed to be well behaved all night. Conditions were not ideal for imaging at the beginning of the night but the weather map looked promising and so we kept the imager mounted. We began the evening imaging stripe 86 N with the idea of performing some seeing tests. Some work had been done plugging some leaks in the lower enclosure and the hope was that it would improve the seeing. However, the seeing was terrible for the entire site so it was difficult to see if there was any improvement. So, this data is probably not useful. Next, we tried 35 N and eventually got some acceptable seeing conditions. There were, however, a few isolated clouds that drifted through the cloud camera during the scan. We would have redone this scan after it finished to get the first part of the scan in good seeing conditions but the tracking rates were too high (too close to zenith). Skippy seemed to exhibit the tracking problem close to zenith like it did last night. See the Problems section for additional skippy entries. The azimuth axis aborted sometime after we ended the drift. We did an axis init but it immediately aborted. A second axis init seemed to work but as the az slewed to its new position the voltage seemed high (-9100). See the Problems section for the watcher error messages after the abort. We then turned to stripe 12 S. The seeing was degraded to about 2" at the beginning of this stripe. It varied between 1.5 and 2" for most of the scan and was marginal at best. After the 3.5 m operator reported that the seeing was azimuth dependent, we decided to go back to stripe 35 N where the seeing had been better and try to get the beginning of the stripe in good conditions, now that it was farther from the zenith. However, the seeing was still 2". At this point we switched to spectroscopy. Due to poor seeing and some clouds we did not finish the plate we attempted. The precalib flat was bad and so SoS never processed b1 and r1 science frames. Furthermore, half of the b2 s/n values were missing as well. This seems to be a recurring problem (missing b2 values). Also, we had to close in a hurry because of high winds and so the last science frame is garbage (not even pointed at the target for the last half of the exposure) and we never had a chance to do the smear or postcalib. Since there may not be a usable flat for this data, the data may not be useful. After closing, the camera started throwing voltage errors. Power supply number 4 appeared to be acting up again. After a conversation with Jon Brinkmann, we pulled the camera out of the doghouse, removed the plates, ran the selector switch through all the voltages and they were all in spec. We then did the same for all the power supplies on both sides of the camera. All voltages were found to be in spec. JB advised us to stow the camera and he will have a look when he comes in. The camera voltages from "cc vcheck" are given below in the problem section. While pulling the camera out, we noticed that the south side of the doghouse door was catching on some yellowish-clear plastic tubing in the bundle. This needs to be fixed ASAP. A PR was filed. As we walked through the downstairs enclosure before leaving we saw the camera shutter pressure vary from 76 to 74 and then back up to 80 all in the period of about 60 seconds. The pressure appeared to be stable before we left. Finally, the chiller pressure (spectro?) is still running high (36 vs. 28). High humidity nearly forced a closure early in the evening but it turned around at the last moment. Highly variable seeing ranging from 1.8 to > 4" early in the evening. The seeing improved to 1.5 - 2" shortly after 22:00 but was still variable. Light wind originally out of the east. Wind increasing and shifting to the southeast and south. Seeing deteriorated to 2.5 around 01:00. Clouds coming in around 03:30. Very high winds forced closure at 05:30.
