Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 07:34:34 -0700 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20010123 (MJD 51933) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday January 23, 2001 (MJD 51933) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Eric Neilsen (FNAL) Jurek Krzensinski (APO) Anders Jorgensen (LANL) PT VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Science. SYNOPSIS: ========= Closed first half due to high humidity. Imaging second half in marginal seeing. 2062: 35,N 1.6" - 2.0" seeing ( should probably be redone ) 2064: 35,S 1.5" - 2"+ seeing ( should probably be redone ) 2065: 36,S 2"+ seeing until frame 110, 1.3" - 1.7" seeing afterward. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== A couple things happened during the afternoon checkout. First we found that it is not possible ( or at least we didn't know how ) to delete frames from the pool which have not been archived. I know this is normally a good thing, but today there were something like three ignorable bias runs which were taken yesterday when the archiver was disabled. The only way we found to solve this was to let the archiver put the frames on tape, then clear the pool. If there is a way to say "delete the frames anyway" to the DA, I'd be curious to know it. Second, when we started up with a fresh set of tapes, all id*-1 drives stopped working. Since all the id*-2 drives continued to archive the frames we wanted to get rid of, we let it finish, the initialized the archiver and told it to use all the drives. This worked fine. A tapeRelabel then got us back to where we wanted to be to start the night. CCD 33's bias level looked normal during the bias drift. Later on, astroline seemed to work OK on that chip as well. We started the night putting the imager on. Just as we were ready to open, the humidity rose too high. The humidity finally dropped enough to open by about 23:00. The seeing was variable, and generally just over the 1.6" acceptable limit, but it was dark and photometric, and we were hopeful it would improve. After toying with us for two runs covering stripe 35, we got some reducible data in the second half of run 2065 covering part of 36,N. We noticed quite an accumulation of rotator error during run 2062. The altitude was relatively high ( ~75 deg ) for this run. However notice that the pointing remained reasonable throughout the run. Selected Skippy excerpts are included for all the science runs.
