THE PLAN: ========= Science. Spectroscopy (Imager unavailable). SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Plate 468 done. Plate 494 very nearly done. Some data for plate 411. Additional data for high S/N plate 440. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== A high dust particle count caused us to close almost immediately after we opened. The humidity, although below closing limits, was also high. We reopened at 20:15 but the seeing was lousy ( > 4"). Clouds also hampered our efficiency. The clouds started to thin around 00:00 and the seeing finally impoved around 04:00. We were able to finish one plate. The seeing blew up around 5:30 and just barely prevented us from finishing a second plate. There may be a problem with the flat field lamps. Three of the lamps came on within 30 s but the fourth lamp took nearly twice as long during the first half of the night. It seemed to improve the second half. This could just be due to the cold though as it warmed up 2-3 deg. C later in the night. When moving the telescope with the MCP to stow position (alt=30) inside the enclosure after closing, the telescope failed to stop at 30. It was stopped using a stop button. An axis stop was issued before the move was attempted so we are not sure what the problem is.
