SYNOPSIS: ========= Clouds, snow, high humidity kept us closed. Made and implemented (kludged) new rotator fiducial table. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We did not open tonight due to clouds, flurries, and high humidity. A note from Scot mentioning large errors from fiducial crossings on the rotator when we were last open prompted us to try some rotator slews and look at the fiducial crossings. It turned out that except for the fiducial used to set up for the night, every fiducial had huge errors, ranging from about two to more than seven degrees. A look at the fiducial table for v4_4_2 of the mcp showed very large errors in the generation of the data points. At this point we decided to generate a new table. Three sweeps were made between -185 and 365 degrees at 200000 counts/sec. A new table was generated and checked in. The errors in this table were on the order of 10 counts, and the values much more closely corresponded to those in older tables except that the fiducial number was less by 5. Fiducial 41 was still missing, but was the only one. Test slews showed normal behavior of correcting on all fiducials, and errors were around 10 counts rather than hundreds of thousands. When we tried to cut a new version of the mcp it failed to compile due to exceeding 100 errors. See the problems section for the details ( see also PR mcp/1800 ). In order to get a working table in place, we took the newly generated table and put it into /p/mcp/v4_4_2/fiducial-tables/rot.dat and put the old one into rot_old.dat, and rebooted the mcp. As a side note, it seems an unnecessary step to declare a new version of the mcp for this when the mcp remains unchanged. Maybe we should consider checking in the new table so that future versions can use it, and then just replace the table in /p/mcp/$current with the improved one? While we were taking the rotator table data, we noticed a few more instances where the TCC axis position for one of the axes was an unrealistic number for an update of the status in the TCC. A sample of the TCC output is appended to the problems section and added to PR 1789.
