SYNOPSIS: ========= Took some spectro darks, spectro1 seemed high. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We did not open tonight due to either clouds, high winds or both. There were several sucker holes, which just as we were deciding to open, either closed in with cloud or the winds kicked up over the limit. This afternoon spectro 2 was found to be warming. The ccds got about 50 C warmer than nominal before they were cooled again. At first it was suspected that the autofill system was not working properly, but later it was found that the hoses had been disconnected for much of the day, and only reconnected about half an hour before the problem was noticed. Tonight when bringing the telescope to zenith to put on the first cartridge of the night, I saw a couple bogus status readings from the TCC. This happened just after 18:00. The altitude was nearly at 90 degrees and slowing to a stop. The status updates which come once every 2 seconds during a slew, showed two updates where the altitude value was a large negative number ( one about -1700, and the other about -4500 ). This had no effect on the slew and the telescope was behaving fine. It looked a lot like the status info being sent to the TCC got garbled after it left the mcp. Filed PR mcp/1789. The plate inventory database started having trouble tonight. Any page which calls for a display of the coverage of plates during the night failed. This seemed to be due to a call to astrotools not being able to find a certain directory it needed. Curiously, displaying any previous mjd worked fine. Only mjd's from 51925 onward showed the problem. Filed PR plate_inventory/1790. We took a few darks as part of the spectro monthly checkout. The 98th percentile values for spectro 1 were higher than they should have been, closer to 25 than 15 ( for both ccds ). The values were the same even with the mechanicals disconnected, so it wasn't from those leds. Is this a problem? When mounting cartridge 1, there was an unusual clunk when the slithead latches were extended for sp2. Dismounting and remounting the cartridge didn't help. It sounds like the slithead latch is hitting the slithead rather than getting under it. Filed PR cartridge_hardware/1791. Dismounting and remounting the cartridge made no difference. I could see no obvious problem with the slithead other than a slight nick on the piece of metal the latch engages on the slithead. The fact that this clunk happens almost immediately upon starting to engage the latch leads me to believe that it is running into the slithead rather than getting underneath it, but it is impossible to tell with the cartridge on the telescope.
