GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We started the night with cart 7 plate 459, setting up on the field before twilight. We finished the plate in 4 exposures, then went on to Cart 2 plate 460. Along the way we tested the revised *ForLog commands and they seem to work fine. We also found a way to serve up both the current and test software version's documentation off our main sdsshost WWW page. Our new installation procedure will be to declare each new software version "test (-t)" then restart the WWW server. The swInstalls document has been suitably modified. We got killer S2/N on plate 460 and would have then switched to imaging had moonrise not been ominous. There was a gap in plate coverage between this plate and the next (483), so we decided to pound on 460 a bit more. After an additional exposure, we switched to cart 1 plate 483. This was finished right as the moon was coming up, but we decided to see what we could do anyways with the next plate cartridge 6 plate 471. We could not see any star in guider fiber 6 in this cart, but we did see light in this fiber during the gflat. We continued to get good S2N even after the moon rose, so we carried on. We finished plate 471 in five exposures, then went to cart 8 plate 490. We pushed this plate farther than reasonable in the moonlight, then went on to perform at least part of the spectro monthly checkout. goSpecFocus (part of the checkout) did not go well. See Problem section below. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm appeared to be completing fine, but too late before we cashed it in. The original position for sp1 were A=0, B=-3 and C=5. The results of mechSend s after the above move showed, Coll_motor_A 0 Coll_motor_B -2600 Coll_motor_C -2599 Coll_motor_A -2601 Coll_motor_B -2600 Coll_motor_C 0 Coll_motor_A -2601 Coll_motor_B -2600 Coll_motor_C -2599 sp2 showed that they moved as commanded the first time we issued mechSend s. We then ran the "goSpecFocus -colorList r" to make sure both sp1 red and sp2 red cameras were in focus and the code output said that they were. We then ran "goSpecFocus", this time so that we know about the red as well as the blue cameras. The output was that sp1's red camera is NOT in focus, and we have to issue "mechPiston -1409" and sp2 red was in focus, but blue had to be moved -7 degrees. So we moved the sp1's red, checked that the motors moved by issuing "mechSend s" and reran "goSpecFocus". The output AGAIN said that sp1 red has to be moved -1409 and the sp2 red was in focus, but blue has to be moved -11 degrees. We moved sp1 red, checked the motor positions and ran "goSpecFocus" yet again. The output said sp1 red had to be moved -1409 and now sp2 red was out of focus and had to be moved 1867 which would bring the sp2 collimator close to where we started. At this point, we gave up on trying to focus. Something is clearly wrong. Every time we moved, we checked the position of the motors by issuing mechSend and the motors indeed moved as commanded. It is as if the collimator positions are not what the "mechSend s" output gives us. As for sp2, we are quite puzzled and at 5:30am, we have not much intelligence to find out what's wrong. We hope to hear what is wrong and have the problem fixed before tonight so that we can complete the monthly checkout.
