SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Stable and good seeing most of the night. Clumps of clouds came and went when we were doing the 3rd exposure on the 1st plate. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= stowed inside the enclosure with cart 6 on. DIMM: ----- 0.7 -- over 3.0". Until 3am, DIMM showed large scatter. Wind? INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed. SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_17_5_4 Watcher: v2_8_3 MCP: v4_3_2b TPM: v2.0.0 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= mostly clear with good seeing. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We had two problems at the start of the night. First we could not slew the telescope with the TCC; it was complaining about too many replies from LTA19: (the MCP) and it got incorrect replies compared to what it was expecting. We called Craig and Robert called in response to an earlier call to him about something else. We thrashed for a bit and eventually decided to try rebooting the MCP again. It worked and all were happy. Later, we noticed that the primary D MIG reading was off what was written on the white board (it has been the same "off" value the past three nights), so we decided to try Russell's new procedures which worked well, but left the mirror moving quite a bit after the final relax was done. A short call to Dan and we realized the mirror had gone into oscillation (oh yeah, I remember that), so we sent it to the RLIMs and brought it back and all was well. Dan also told us the MIG numbers on the white board are not the latest since he re-collimated his last night (the night of the interlock breakdown). There are new setmir numbers in his log we will compare with, but not MIG numbers. Comparing the setmir values from Sep.2 (51790) and tonight, Tx is off about 3.4. Dan, are these the right numbers? All this was while the moon was up and bright, so we didn't lose any on-sky time. The seeing conditions from the 3.5m and the DIMM looked good, so we just left the telescope out to equilibrate so we could get some good seeing data. Around 23:30, however, the seeing started to seriously deteriorate and the DIMM and the 3.5m were getting above 1.3" (as high as 2") seeing for considerable lengths of time, so we switched to spectroscopy. We predicted the seeing would then get better again and it did, but we continued with spectroscopy anyhow. We did preCalib 1 2 for cart 8 plate 388 because we had time. The 2nd arc shows fewer lamp lines found. Scott B., do you know why ? We saw similar things last night as well. During the 3rd exposure on cart3 plate 388, clumps of clouds started to rush in. The second plate of the night was cart 7 plate 398. By the time we started science exposures on this plate, there were very few clouds around. The third plate of the night was cart 9 plate 402. Both plate 398 and plate 402 got a S/N > 100. The seeing of the guide stars was between 1.0 to 1.5" during the night. At the end of the night, we tried to move the scope using instChange command so that we can take cartridge 9 off the telescope. The move was aborted because the rotator was not quite at 0 degrees before the scope went above 70 degrees in Alt. We tried moving the telescope using the instChange command again, but we saw the move being halted in TCC and therefore we tried to control-C out of the instChange command. After this, trying to move the telescope using the TCC was unsuccessful and we could not get the MCPMenu to move the telescope either --- access to move the telescope was "RESTRICTED" and we could not get "FULL" access. This is because the control-C'd instChange command was probably still trying to move the telescope, and denying any other access to the MCP. We did not know any clever way to get out of this situation, so we rebooted MCP and everything was fine again. Sir Robert, what is the clever way out of this? endNight ran happily and successfully.
