SYNOPSIS: ========= Generally not imaging-conditions. We completed 6 spectro plates. GENERAL COMMENTS: =================== During the afternoon checkout, the mir stat command in TCC gave, mir stat 0 2 I PrimCmdMount=5150., -2950., 400., -5850., 14600., 14100. 0 2 I PrimActMount=5150., -2950., 400., -5850., 14600., 14100. 0 2 I PrimOrient=0.00, -8.36, 11.84, 640.32, 439.52 0 2 I PrimStatus=65537, 65537, 65537, 65537, 65537, 65537 0 2 I Received=" 1 lateral links (0 disengaged, 1 engaged)" 0 2 I SecCmdMount=NaN, NaN, NaN, NaN, NaN 0 2 I SecActMount=NaN, NaN, NaN, NaN, NaN 0 2 W Text="Cannot compute SecOrient; not all axes homed" 0 2 I SecStatus=65537, 65537, 65537, 65537, 65537 So we homed the secondary. After that, we were able to get numbers for the secondary. The rotator was also moved at 250000 c/s from 0 to 360 and back per French's suggestion. When endDrifting the first imager bias in the dog house, we got, "Error: child process exited abnormally". But the second endDrift did not get this message. What does this message actually mean? (It's probably related to the makeRunLog problem, right?) We opened around 7:30pm and put cart 4 plate 360 on. The MCP froze while setting up and we had to reboot it. We re-installed the new increased rotator current limits per RHL's now-folklored email. The seeing was poor (around 2.2" or so) and small clouds started to show up. instChange command brought the scope to ALT= 70 instead of ALT=90. The command left the sop window with mcpPut: TEL2 AXIS.STATUS mcpPut: TEL1 AXIS.STATUS mcpPut: TEL2 AXIS.STATUS mcpPut: TEL1 AXIS.STATUS scrolling over and over and did not give the prompt back. We control-C'd out of the command, and reissued the command hoping that it will take the scope to ALT=90. This did not work and sop did not release the hold of the MCP. We had to telnet to the mcp and release the semaphore per another of RHL's folklore emails to get the control back so that we can use mcpMenu to bring the scope to ALT=90. We did starPattern to get the fiber angles for this plate. This is the last cart we needed to get good angles for. Scott B., please look at the angles and incorporate them into SOP as needed. We observed cart 3, plate 382 next. During these observations, we got a critical error on the imager ion pump pressure. We called Jon B. and checked the ion pump pressure (by a cc imstat command in IOP) which was at 1.16. Jon told us we should not have to worry about it unless the pressure goes beyond 2. The critical error messages stopped after a few minutes. So we decided to monitor the pressure, but not to panic unless it goes above 2. Connie, can you check if the watcher's tolerances are set too low that we get false alarms? Again, when we tried to use the instChange command, the telescope did not move to (121, 90), and it halted at ALT=70 or so. I don't remember what the AZ value was when the telescope halted, but it was not at 121. TCC mon showed all axis were halted and SOP just showed the messages (mcpPut: TEL1 AXIS.STATUS mcpPut: TEL2 AXIS.STATUS) scrolling by. We issued axis init a few times, but it did not clear the halted state. We used control-C in SOP, forcibly wrastled control of the MCP back, and moved the telescope to inst change position from the mcpMenu. Scott B. and/or Sir Lupton, please check on what has happened to this nice command. Something must have gotten broken. SoS choked on the 3rd b1 exposure of this palte, but it did not crash and calculated the following exposures' S/N vales fine. Even without the 3rd exposure, b1 had S/N>15. r1, b2, r2 needed all 4 exposures to achieve a S/N>15. We do not know what is wrong with the 3rd exposure of b1. We declared this plate done anyhow. While trying to setup on the 3rd cart, SOP acted up. First, the fSAOimage display disappeared, and we got a message "I think that we haven't started slewing" over and over scrolling in the sop window. We decided to exit out of sop and restart it. I could not drop instruments by grabInstruments -drop, so we went to the sdss-ts-spectro and logged out the ports. I suspect this strange behavior comes from using control-C to get out of the instChange command earlier. (Yes it does.) Control-C seems to be a dangerous command in IOP/SOP in general. Instead of again trying instChange, we moved the telescope to (121, 70, 0) in the TCC and then moved the telescope to ALT=90 from the mcpMenu for the rest of the night. We observed cart 2 plate 396 next. The seeing improved, and the clouds went away. We were able to achieve S/N>15 with 3 exposures. Our 5th cart of the night was cart 9 plate 405 and was declared done after 3 exposures. Our 6th cart of the night was cart 8 plate 410. This plate already had 3 exposures this dark run. We did one 900s exposure followed by smear and then another 5 min exposure. After doing the smear exposure, there was about 5 min left before twilight. We decided to take a short exposure which can then be added to enhance the S/N later. IOP v3_18_4_1 and MCP v4_3_8 were declared current. We closed the enclosure around 6:00am. endNight -doSpectro -doTpm ran and completed successfully!
