SYNOPSIS: ========= Got survey quality data! Clear night, great seeing. Finished off 86 S, 76 N, and most of 86 N from the high priority list of scans. Had three rotator over-currents. Great data, but endNight has NOT completed due to tape drive problem. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== A very nice night. It was clear tonight with seeing around an arcsecond ( and sometimes less ) all night long. We imaged all night, getting about eight hours of imaging, plus a FASTT field at the end of the night. Plate 357 was found to be done in a message from long Scott, so we declared it so. No M2 problems tonight. Tonight we saw three more rotator stoppages. Imager mounted this time. Summary below. time mount position rate cts/sec 22:50 42 -30 04:00 53 -17 04:37 48 small neg. (didn't record value) The behavior tonight seemed a little different. It still built up slowly over the course of half an hour or more. However, the current maxed out several minutes before the axis aborted. Could it be that the current limit isn't an abort condition, just a maximum allowed value, and that the abort occurs when the error exceeds some value? Thus for the very low rates it could take a few minutes to build up enough error to abort once the maximum current allowed would no longer move the rotator. makeRunLog had trouble tonight. It failed for runs 1737, 1739, and 1740. It complained about not being able to find gang files. We finally realized that it was failing because we had started another drift and it was looking for gang files of the current ( just started ) run number. Trying to go back and run makeRunLog later didn't work either. Details at end of log. Skippy bombed out for some frames early in 1738. Traceback is in the detail section. I saw a new and disturbing message coming from endNight. Wed Sep 27 06:06:28 MDT 2000 Starting /data/astro/51814/1737 archiving. 1298744 blocks to archive. Estimate finish at Wed Sep 27 06:13:30 2000 tar_any_data[11]: 2943154q: Arguments must be %job or process ids Wed Sep 27 06:13:20 MDT 2000 /data/astro/51814/1737 finished. This message showed up for all runs 1737 through 1742. When I went into the computer room to get the tapes. The right gang tape drive had all its leds flashing, and the left one was not writing. This means the gangs have not been archived. The day staff will have to get the drive going ( or replace it ) and run endNight as soon as possible. I am concerned about the night's data. Three things have me worried. First, this problem of makeRunLog not completing. Second, when I unloaded the tapes, the ID5 drives rewound about three times faster than all the others. Third, one of the gang drives chokes during endNight. Is there a way to check that all the dewar 5 data indeed went onto the tapes? If the data is not there, can we still rescue it from the pool?
