Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 07:02:56 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20000925 (MJD 51813) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 25, 2000 (MJD 51813) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Bryan Laubscher (LANL) Bing Chen (JHU) VISITORS: ========= Larry Carey (UW) Steve Kent (FNAL) THE PLAN: ========= Get survey quality data. SYNOPSIS: ========= Got survey quality data! Yet another round of M2 galil comm. problems, but this time we managed to get on sky by 20:00. Got more on plate 357, but still not done. Switched to imaging at 23:00. Did 86 S from 163 to -122, despite losing M2 comm during run. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== M2 stopped talking once again. It seems to wait until about 7 PM to die. Like the last two times the failure was such that one of the LEDs on the fiber transceiver was still on. Made the switch in 10 minutes this time. Also like last night, we had to reboot the TCC to get the LAT layer talking again. We got a total of 7 exposures on plate 357, in mediocre seeing, before it got too low to continue observing. All but r2 were over the S/N threshold. It will likely take another couple of exposures to finish the plate. While we were taking calibrations, the seeing improved with a wind switch from east to south. Since it was photometric, we decided to switch to imaging. This was the first opportunity to use the new corrector handling cart. There are some details yet to be finished, but it works well and gives one a much better feeling about handling the corrector than dangling it over concrete with the manipulator. We took about an hour making the swap to the imager as we spent some time going over the new cart handling setup. After getting setup on the sky, we scanned stripe 86 starting at a lambda of 164 at about 00:20. Median seeing for most of this stripe was about 1.4 arcseconds from Steve Kent's plotting tool. There was a chunk of about 10 frames from 135 to 145 where the median seeing jumped to 1.8. At about 03:20 the secondary stopped talking again. As we were getting good image quality, and the telescope wasn't moving much in altitude, we decided to let the scan continue as long as the image quality remained acceptable. ( the alternative was to lose nice seeing and photometric conditions messing with the M2 galil ). Amazingly enough, the seeing remained well within spec for nearly two hours after the secondary stopped talking ( desired focus only wandered about 15 - 20 microns from actual ). We were able to finish the stripe, going to a final lambda of -122. Like last night, we had some rotator over-current problems. They occurred when the rotator was between about 75 and 85 degrees, and tracking in the positive direction at a rate of about 700 counts per second. The current would creep up from around 6000 to the 12,000 limit over the course of about 10 minutes. One could head off the trip by moving the rotator in the negative direction about a degree, then past the original tracking point by a degree, then put it back on course with a rot 0 obj. This would have the effect of resetting the current value to around 5000 or so, from which it would then start creeping up. A couple software version issues. The mcp is actually still Robert's own version of 4_3_8. Apparently the mcp was never rebooted after the switch back to 4_3_7 was made. As things have been working fine so far this run as far as the mcp was concerned, we opted to let the latest version continue running. Be aware though that if the mcp is rebooted it will revert to 4_3_7 as things stand. The second is that a new version of iop has been tagged which contains the smear bug fixes. We can either declare that current, or continue sourcing the individual file /usrdevel/snedden/iop/etc/sop/header.tcl. If the *only* change in v3_18_4_1 from v3_18_4 is the bug fix in header.tcl, it should be safe to switch versions during the dark run, otherwise it would be best to continue sourcing the particular file. There was a problem which occurred whenever makeRunLog was run. It kept complaining about not being able to make a log for run 1725, even though the runs we were taking tonight started with 1726. See the traceback later in the log. There's no easy way to get the current maximum (there will be in the next version of the MCP). From iop, you should be able to say mcpPut "TEL1 MS.MAX 300" I don't think that you have to grab the semaphore first; if you do you use mcpFullAccess -take first and mcpFullAccess -give afterwards.
