SYNOPSIS: ========= Another round of M2 galil comm. problems kept us from getting started on time. Got on sky at around 21:30. Got a little on plate 357 ( S/N 2 ). Finished plates 419, 394, 404. Almost got enough to declare 410 done. Had some trouble with rotator aborts, and SoS hanging, and bouts of 4+ arcsec seeing. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== M2 stopped talking again. Another failure where one of the LEDs on the fiber transceiver was still on. Chip switch getting pretty fast these days, down to 20 minutes. The communications to the galil failed in a different way to previous failures, in that it didn't just stop talking. For a while it sometimes responded, but usually with garbled or incorrect response. Apparently the M2 communication failure also managed to bring down the TCC LAT communications. A reboot of the TCC was required to straighten things out. As usual, these things take a while to diagnose, so it was about 21:30 by the time we were on the sky doing science. Seeing was horrendous at times, especially for plates 357 and 394 sometimes we got less than 1 S/N unit in a 15 minute exposure. This was when seeing was around 4 arcseconds. When seeing went over 5 arcseconds the guider could no longer determine centroids. There was about half an hour when we could not even attempt to take data because of the bad seeing. We had some trouble with the rotator overcurrenting. Several times while tracking between 85 and 90 deg, moving slowly in the positive direction, the current topped the limit, which I believe is 10,000 in the units displayed in the menu. It was running between 7000 and 9000 when tracking here. Slewing or tracking elsewhere, the current was typically 5000 to 7000. All of these values are higher than what I remember for the rotator. It was always higher than the other two axes, but usually was in the 2000 to 4000 range. A check of the wrap showed it to be free to move, not hung up or pinched anywhere. Son of Spectro stopped working again tonight. This time it quit on the spectro 2 side of the third science exposure of plate 419. After seeing no updates for about an hour, I called Dave Schlegel and he got it going again. When we closed, we heard a metallic clank as the building was moving. It came from the vicinity of the new corrector holding area ( cat house ). This was from two roughly foot long aluminum blocks. We stopped in time to retrieve one from under the platform in front of the door. Unfortunately the other one got dragged under the weather stripping under the door. The weather stripping may have been bent from this. The blocks are on the table next to the door. Battling air masses overhead made for extremely variable and generally poor seeing. At best it was around 1.0 arcseconds, at worst it exceeded 5. The temperature varied quite a bit as well, making it difficult for the telescope to reach equilibrium.
