SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== A good night for spectroscopy. Four plates done. Only a few problems. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 8 mounted. Counterweights at 250. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_18_4 Watcher: v2_8_6 MCP: v4_3_7 TPM: v2_1_1 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Cloudy until about 22:00. Then clear to mostly clear. Wind shifted from the North at about 04:00 and seeing deteriorated. Cool temps. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Larry continued to work on the cat house, corrector cart and lift today. The afternoon checkout was uneventful (yes, we could communicate with the secondary!), but clouds and a threat of precipitation delayed opening until about 22:20. The skies were not photometric, so we were on the sky for spectroscopy by 22:45. Cartridge 2, plate 381: ----------------------- offsets: az=0.003, alt=0.0023 We had a large scale factor correction of -.016. This is 2 to 3 times as large as we are used to seeing. Some clouds during the science exposures. We found a bug in header.tcl that affects smear (See problems). There is no smear pattern for this plate. We declared the plate done. Cartridge 9, plate 422: ----------------------- offsets: az= -0.002, alt=0.0033 No problems. We declared the plate done. Cartridge 5, plate 416: ----------------------- offsets: az=0.005, alt=0.002 No problems. We declared the plate done. Cartridge 8, plate 410: ---------------------- offsets: az=0.005, alt=0.002 No problems, except that seeing deteriorated as the wind shifted. Two science exposures were made before twilight. Not declared done. Note: we need accounts and procedures for restarting son-of-spectro, the on-site spectro QA tool (see the problems section). Noticed this error at the end of smear. The chip never reads out, so no data is written. Too bad since it seems that the spectrographs are indeed integrating during the smear pattern. This is a change in the behavior of smear since the last dark run. Curiously, no changes have been made to smear.tcl since the last dark run, so it must be in one of the routines called by smear. See output of tb below. We found the problem to be that the array smearValue was being accessed by the _value_ of az rather than the element az in header.tcl. When the arguments were changed from $smearValue($az) to $smearValue(az) $smearValue($alt) to $smearValue(alt) $smearValue($nswath) to $smearValue(nswath) the routine completed successfully. I'm pretty sure this is what was intended, and we are getting smear frames from the spectrographs. The worst thing we might be doing is populating the headers with bogus smearValue data. sourcing /usrdevel/snedden/iop/etc/sop/header.tcl will get you the changes. beginData has failed: can't read "az": no such variable sp1> /data/spectro/guider/gimg0764.fits sp1> tb can't read "az": no such variable (parsing index for array "smearValue") invoked from within "daHdrLine $hdr $line Dbl $keyword $smearValue($az..." invoked from within "set line [daHdrLine $hdr $line Dbl $keyword $smearValue($az..." invoked from within "if [info exists smearValue(az)] { set line [daHdrLine $hdr $line Dbl $keyword $smearValue($az) "Az increment for smear pattern (asec)"] } " invoked from within "if {$scanType(flavor) == "smear" } { global smearValue if [info exists smearValue(az)] { set line [daHdrLine $hdr $line Dbl $keyword ..." We guess it choked on the bad smear frames. Unfortunately we don't have accounts on plate-mapper, therefore cannot restart Son-of-Spectro. We should be given the appropriate procedures to do this. Please provide us with the necessary info. RUNLOGS: ========
