Imaging if conditions permit. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Clear skies and good seeing until 01:20. Imaging of stripe 86 N. A major interlocks failure at 03:00. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with imager mounted. Counterweights at 700. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_17_5_4 Watcher: v2_8_3 MCP: v4_3_2 TPM: v2_0_0 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Mostly clear at sunset. What few clouds were around dissipated quickly. Photometric conditions until 01:20. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We mounted the imager and opened to clear skies at twilight. Collimation was checked and was good (a bit of coma, but we believe we could be seeing thermal effects on the primary. We decided not to fine tune collimation until later in the night). While waiting for the starting lambda of stripe 86 to get closer to the meridian, we tested Skippy. We had a problem that was related to IOP's goDrift that caused Skippy to fail (see problems) but once that was resolved, Skippy appeared to work as advertised. We note that if Skippy is meant to be used iteratively, this is not very efficient, because you have to wait for twelve frames to scroll by before you can start Skippy again, once you have moved the rotator. Skippy's output is a little confusing. Is THETAF the rotator correction? We used that value in a TCC rotator offset, and the magnitude seemed correct, but the sign appeared to be opposite. When we reversed the sign, the correction worked very well. It is very nice to be able to run Skippy during a drift to see how the rotator is doing. This is a good feature. We started scanning stripe 86 N, startLambda=120 at 22:10. At about 01:25 clouds moved in quickly. Frames up to #320 or 325 should be okay. We kept scanning in hopes the clouds would go as quickly as they came. The clouds did not dissipate, right away, so we decided to stop the drift and check collimation. The drift was ended at 01:56 at frame 377, lambda = 175. The collimation check indicated a small amount of coma. We followed the collimation procedure, applied corrections, and went to relax the primary. The new setmir values are: P Tx Ty Dx Dy 0.0 5.0 11.7 640 128 At this point (around 03:00), we had a major interlocks failure that required calling in French. See the problems section for details. This problem was still being worked on at the time this log was filed. If this had ocurred when bad weather was threatening, we would have been in serious trouble! As it was we were able to get the telescope stowed with a fair amount of difficulty, by 06:30. This happens because when the flavor is ignore, you are not asked for stripe info and a default of 100,O is used. The issue here is that we should never have the stripe information go to the gang headers from goDrift...the values should be taken from ScanStripe instead, because that is where the telescope really is. In tonight's case, it caused Skippy to fail, since Skippy looked for a catalog that didn't exist, based on the header information. Once the header values matched the actual values, all worked well. Galileo: -------- At 22:10 we noted that Galileo was refusing connections. Apparently it crashed, however it auto-rebooted normally. IOP: ---- Filling out the run log at the end of a drift takes several minutes and ties up your IOP session while doing so. If you want to start another drift right away, you have to start another IOP which also takes a minute or so. It would be nice if filling out the run log could be done in the background of IOP. INTERLOCKS: ----------- At 03:07 a very strange and bad thing happened. The Watcher Interlocks display started cycling between all red, except for the brakes being in "neither" and all green with alt brake on and az brake in "neither" with every update. The Watcher reported aborts for all three axes. When we went to the lower enclosure, the interlocks bypass LEDs and all telescope stop buttons were all flickering at a frequency of 5 Hz. Dan smelled a "burnt moth" smell when he first went into the lower enclosure. We did not smell anything on the second trip. Dan tried power cycling the interlocks rack, but it had no effect. He then turned the power off at the main switch to the entire rack that houses the interlocks. This meant we could not use the manual pendants to move the telescope, since we could not bypass the interlocks. This also means the MCP, TPM etc. are all powered down. At this point (03:30), we called French. This may or may not be related, but just prior to this the telesope was being collimated, and part of that involved relaxing the primary. When the telescope was coming down from high altitude after relaxing, there was an abort at alt=58 deg. Axis init fixed the problem. The primary was later relaxed again, and the second time, coming down from alt=85 deg, the telescope stopped again at alt=58 deg, and this is when the interlocks trouble happened. It is suspicious that both times it was at 58 deg, but we do not understand how this would relate to the problem. French arrived and started to troubleshoot. The goal was to bypass the interlocks and move the telescope to stow manually. At first he tried bypassing directly to the Sumitomos, but that didn't work. Paul Czarapata was called. Tried powering the PLC at the windbaffle directly with a power supply instead of through the interlocks panel. In addition to 24V at the PLC, you also need to power the interlock power block at the windbaffle, and the doghouse paddle azimuth interlock relay. Then we were able to move the telescope with the manual pendant. French continues to look into the problem. Note that Dan had to pull the air supply hose to the 15 degree stop in order to lower the telescope in altitude. IT IS STILL DISCONNECTED.
