SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== MCP's fiducial updating is not working. We have taken a Pointing model (70 points). TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= stowed with the eng cam. SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_18_3 Watcher: v2_8_5 MCP: v4_3_5 TPM: v2.0.0 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= calm and clear GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Afternoon tasks: This afternoon, Larry worked on the second corrector cart and cathouse. We rolled the corrector cart to the hydraulic lift, raised it and tested for fit. It clears the latches okay, but the screw holding one wheel hits the imager cart sensor by the north cart rail. Larry will fix this. We discovered in the afternoon that the HVAC was running but not cooling. A call to Mark K. put us on the track of checking the knife switch for the condenser. It had been shut off. This meant that it would be unlikely that we would reach thermal equilibrium during the first half of the night. Jon B. pumped the spectrographs and by 18:30 started cooling them. We mounted the engineering camera and verified we could communicate with it. We switched to MCP version v3_4_5. This version has valid fiducial tables for all axes. Mirror problem: We first looked at an out of focused image to check the collimation. The image looked like a pretty evenly illuminated donut. Therefore we decided to leave the collimation alone and try to focus and start taking a pointing model. This is when we noticed that we could not communicate to the secondary. We called up Craig, checked the power to the secondary was on, we checked to see if the LED on the fiber connector was on (Steph remembered that it is usually on.). We did not see any LED on. We power cycled and changed fuses, but this did not solve the problem. At this point, Craig and Carlos both thought that one of the two serial chips inside the secondary control box seems to have gone bad again. Carlos was asked to come in to replace the bad chip. After the chips were replaced we had to log out of the xyplex port for the secondary before we were able to talk to the secondary. We homed the secondary after we established the connection, and checked the out-of-focus donut image again to make sure we were happy with the collimation. We focused (-2450) then proceeded to do a pointing model. After doing few stars, we noticed that the fiducial errors in all axis have been huge for some time. We paused taking the pointing model to reset the fiducial. We noticed that after refiducializing, there was one fiducial crossing with small error, and then they all became very large again and these large corrections were not applied (which is the correct thing). We decided that the automatic updating scheme on the fiducials were not working and decided to take the pointing models refiducializing every 10pts. By the time we noticed that the fiducial errors are always large, we felt it was too late to call Robert. Instead we decided to keep taking the data so that he can look at the data files to figure out what was wrong in the during the more civilized time of the day. When we were refiducializing after taking 50 points, the MCP could not read the normal v33 120:45 fiducial for AZ. So we used v10 135 degree fiducial instead. During the slew after refiducializing, we saw random axis abort on ALT around 31 degrees. After doing axis init for 3 times, we were able to slew to the star again. When we tried later, there was no problem. We had no problem finding the v33 AZ fiducial after taking 10 more points for the pointing model. But during the slew after refiducializing, we saw a random ROT abort. The errors are systematic...larger errors in azimuth at low altitudes in the west. In areas we will be working in regularly, the errors were better, between 2 and 3 asec. We could probably use this model for the dark run, however we may choose to do another tomorrow night if work is done on the fiducial tables. For this reason, we did not load this model into telmod. We will wait to see what the fiducial status is tomorrow before deciding.
