Imaging is a high priority, but spectroscopy if weather doesn't permit imaging. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Partly cloudy skies and bad seeing meant spectroscopy. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with cartridge 3. Counterweights at 280. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_17_5_4 Watcher: v2_8_3 MCP: v4_3_2 TPM: v2_0_0 AstroDa: 14_34 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy through the first half. Partly cloudy then clear at the end of the night. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== We opened to partly cloudy skies at sunset, and started spectroscopy with cartridge 2, plate 352. We had a somewhat slow start because of an MCP problem and a rotator abort (see Problems section). We then had to deal with increasing clouds that made data taking slow. Eventually, we progressed to cartridge 8, plate 379, then Cartridge 6, plate 398. We used the latest, but not current, version of SOP (v3_17_5_4) so that "smear" could be tested. It worked. We found a few other problems that are noted in the problems section. Two of the problems have been filed as PRs and we hope will be looked at soon. This has the effect of disabling MS.ON every time one goes to instrument change. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: Is it possible that this fiducial does not have a defined position? It has a very similar magnitude of error to that of the undefined azimuth fiducials. SOP - grabInstruments -drop: ---------------------------- Filed as PR sop/1310: grabInstruments -drop has trouble letting go. >Description: When I try to drop instruments, I get an error message about an unknown variable called packeteerSocket. After I issued the command it looks like the handler was still running trying to do camchecks etc, but the telnet connection was refused. A check of the terminal server showed that the ports were indeed still connected. Logging out the ports stopped the connection refused message, but the periodic camchecks and ln2stats kept coming. Traceback follows. sp1> grabInstruments -drop Error: can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable sp1> tb can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable while executing "close $packeteerSocket..." (procedure "grabInstruments" line 50) invoked from within "grabInstruments -drop" MCP: ---- At the start of the night, the MCP was in a curious state. We could move all axes via the MCP Menu, and all axes reported ready in both the Menu and Watcher. When we tried to slew with the TCC, alt and az did not move, but the rotator did. We rebooted the MCP (twice...the first one did not work). This fixed the problem. Rotator: -------- During the first spectro session, the rotator aborted. We do not know for sure what happened. The abort ocurred at 32.4 degrees. We kept an eye on the current via the TPM real time display. The current varied from 1400-3500, which we understand should not have been enough to cause the amplifier to trip, but does seem somewhat high. SOP: ---- SOP had to be restarted once. The guiderMon stopped displaying new guider images. Issuing a stopMon and startMon did not fix it. Restarting SOP did.
