Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2000 06:34:29 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20000831 (MJD 51788) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday August 31, 2000 (MJD 51788) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Dan Long (APO) Steph Snedden (APO) Eric Neilsen (JHU) PT VISITORS: ========= Jim Gunn (PU) THE PLAN: ========= Science, weather permitting. SYNOPSIS: ========= Open all night under mostly clear skies and got 2500+ spectra. Not a bad haul. Finished plates 355, 373, 386, and 401. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== An Imager problem was discovered this afternoon. Power supply second from left on leading side failed, but did not crowbar. It was replaced and camera checked out OK. The symptoms of this type of failure were that all voltages including CCD temperatures change by some similar ratio ( in this case 2/3 of their nominal value ). The watcher did not throw any critical errors, as it normally would if the power supply had shut down properly. One needs to remember that if the camera is power cycled that it comes up in safe mode ( very low gain ). One needs to send the command cc SETVDDNOM to the camera to get the nominal CCD voltages ( the camera must be cold of course ). Smear wiped out? When we tried using the SOP smear command it failed complaining command invalid. This was using version v3_17_5_3 which was the version indicated to have the changes. See the end of the log and PR sop/1301 for details. The instrument block was updated to reflect the consistent offset in rotation seen with spectroscopic plates. It amounted to a .06 degree ( ~200" ) change. With this in place, most of the time targets could be acquired by moving in altitude, typically -.004 degrees. Only once was an offset in an axis other than altitude required to acquire the guide stars. Fiber angles were checked for all 4 cartridges used tonight. The results are appended at the end of the log.
