SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Finished spectro shake (monthly checkout and the focal plane mapping) and one science plate. We could not go through list of PRs that needed testing because APO's internet connection to the outside world was down and we could not check the PR database. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30 deg alt with the spectrograph (cart9). INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_17_5a Watcher: v2_8_3 MCP: v4_3_2 TPM: v2_0_0 AstroDa: 14_33 TCC: 2.4.0b2 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Clear with occasional small clouds. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Scott B. finished off the collimation/focusing (monthly checkout) of the spectrographs in the afternoon and early evening. We then proceeded to do spectroscopy with the cart that was already on ( cart.3, plate 356). The seeing at the beginning of the night was about 2 to 3 arcsec -- not good enough for FASTT field imagine, but good enough for spectroscopy. Since internet link from APO to the outside world is down, required testing. Instead, we decided to test the ones Scott remembered we needed to test. During setup, we got error messages in TCC (ppk errors) which was caused by the fiber cables for the guider camera not plugged in. We plugged them, recycled the power and rebooted the guider Mac. Then we were ready to go. The first preCalib flat field turned out to have very little counts. We do not know why. We took another flat field which turned out fine. SOS uses the first flat field exposures for the analysis. Scott said it will be changed at some point to use the most recent calibration frames. Often, we had to issue multiple "gotoField" command before the telescope started moving. Scott suspects the "axis init" command issued to TCC from "gotofield" might be the cause of the problem (although why it is a problem is not quite clear...) and we tested "gotoField" with and without "axis init". It seems "gotoField" without "axis init" will move the telescope without having to type it in multiple times. Scott B. tells us that S/N>60 is good enough to get science out of the spectrum. Therefore, we will change our criteria for number of exposures we take to S/N>60, not S/N>80 which we have been using. Scott B. will later email this officially. We finished off plate 356 and was declared done. We then proceeded to do the focal plane mapping with cart 9, plate 174 as the moon rose. The seeing has imrpoved to about 1.5" to 1.7" or so by the time we had cart 9 on the scope --- perfect for focal plane mapping. After our first exposure with 1" offset to the E, we noticed that the fiber angles that were in the database are not as reliable as we hoped for. Therefore, we did a starPattern to get new rot. angles. Scott thinks that since the FASTT field stars are brighter, the angles computed using the FASTT field are probably reliable. It might be a good idea to get the angles for all cartidges using the FASTT field. Scott has also created new commands so that we can guide while taking offset exposures (i.e. exposures with guide stars not centered on the fibers). This allows us to visually make sure the exposure in progress are the one with the correct offset. I will update the folklore page with Andy's "cheap and easy focal plane mapping procedure" to include the new commands. We completed taking 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 0.5" offset exposures for focal plane mapping. I mistakenly ran endNight -doSpectro for yesterday. Please ignore JL2911. JL2913 is the tape with tonight's data. Sorry about this confusion.
