GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Before Dark: During the afternoon checkout, when we tried to do a test bias using the imager, we found out that ad2 was not sending heartbeat to murmur log. We called Chris S. and he called Don H. Don tried to re-establish the connection between the mumur and ad4 without success, therefore the cables became suspects for the problem. Craig L. checked the cables, and although nothing was obviously wrong, when we swapped the cables, the ad2 started responding again. After taking bias with spectro, I issued a "grabInstruments -drop" command. I got a message saying, Error: can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable. When I checked the ports on sdss-ts-spectro, I found that all ports were available. In other words, I was kicked out of the ports. I don't know when or why this happened. Have other observers seen this before? The HVAC was switched from AUTO to ON so that the observers can turn it off shortly before opening instead of the timer turning it off at 8pm. We hope this should help the thermal problem observed last night. Since it is likely that we will not open around sunset, it makes sense to keep the enclosure cool and dry until it is time to open. We had trouble grabbing the spectrographs tonight, "grabInst -handlers 80" gave the following error message 'Error: can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable' DATA ACQUISITION (see IOP/SOP output below): =========================================== IMAGING: -------- Run Type --- ---- 1549 bias afternoon test bias SPECTROSCOPY: ------------- Exposure Type -------- ---- 4367 bias in the afternoon 4368 bias 4369 bias -init MIRRORS: ======== PRIMARY: -------- MIGS SHOULD BE Axial A=1.9284 1.9284 Axial B=0.5584 0.5594 Axial C=0.5574 0.5579 Transverse D=0.3729 0.3744 Lateral E=1.9065 1.9065 Lateral F=0.4074 0.4074 GALILS Commanded: 5883.,-3086.,-197.,4201.,7343.,7041. But as there seems to be nothing wrong with the /p/astrobase/fitsHeaders.tcl, Chris suggest I try dcslat into ad2 to see if it alive. It was alive. Chris then found Don who tried re-establishing the ad2-mumur connection, but did not succeed. We tried rebooting the astro crates, but this did not solve the problem either. At this point, Don suspected the cables. Craig looked, wiggled and swaped ad2 cables with ad1 cables and found out that it was indeed the cables that was causing the problem. sop --- When we went to do a "grabInst -handlers 80" we obtained the message: Error: can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable A reissue of the "grabInst -handlers 80" we obtained just "0" as the response. We then did a "grabInst -drop" which gave the error Error: can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable At this point we decided to look at the Xyplex to see what was/was not connected and found we could not get system-level access to the ports. This prompted the call to Criag Loomis, who found that it worked for him. Hayes retried at the APO end and obtained a response on the Xyplex this time. The ports were all logged out and we then tried another "grabInst -handlers 80", which was rewarded this time with a "0" and from there we could take images. At the end of the night we tried another "grabInst -drop" and obtained the message: Error: can't read "packeteerSocket": no such variable which would seem to indicated we did not have the instruments. We checked by logging into the Xyplex again, and found we were not attached. The question is whether we actually had control in the first place. At this point we do not know.
