Focal plane mapping practice or for real if conditions warrant. SYNOPSIS: ========= We opened briefly between 22:00 and 22:50 and got set up and focused on the field for cartridge 7 plate 182 (for focal-plane mapping). Weather forced us to close again. We re-opened at 01:45 and finished plate 353. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Before Dark: We homed the optics this afternoon. We were a little concerned that the transverse primary MiG was consistently .0015 low, and that the calibration offsets used for last night's spectroscopy were not the same which had been working despite being in roughly the same orientation. After Dark: Opening was delayed by clouds, but we were suckered into opening as the mostly clear skies at twilight beckoned. The clouds rolled back in a short time later accompanied by strong east winds. We were open from 22:00 to 22:50. We did manage to setup and focus in preparation to practicing focal plane mapping. The calibration offsets were back to what had worked in the past, so homing the mirrors seemed to have helped ( and been necessary ). At 01:45 winds died down and skies cleared enough for us to reopen. We mounted cartridge 6, plate 353. This plate has about half the exposures needed, and even under poor seeing, we felt we could finish it tonight. Unfortunately, seeing deteriorated badly and the east wind picked up again. We did achieve a total (S/N)^2 of greater than 80 if you include the exposures taken on MJD 51696. Since the spectrographs have been refocused since then, we are not declaring this plate done. The pipeline folks should do so if the two data sets can be combined. There was a problem with SOP's loadCartridge command tonight (see problems section). This could have been workstation related, as we had to reboot the station SOP was running on earlier, so no PR has been filed. Dan noticed water in the HVAC duct (problems section). An APO site PR was filed. After having successfully loaded and worked with cartridge 7 plate 182, I got the following message when I tried to load cartridge 7 349. sp1> loadCartridge 7 349 /p/iop/v3_16_2/params/cartridgeInfo.par Reading /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-0349-51691-01.par Error: REDDEN_STD is not a legal OBJTYPE value Can't set h45.objType to REDDEN_STD This happened for any plugMap file which had REDDEN_STD as a type, even the map file which worked last night. I quit and restarted sop and the message didn't return, loadCartridge went back to working normally. Leaky HVAC duct: ---------------- I heard water dripping under the grating in front of the 2.5m enclosure tonight. I figured it was condensation from the coils of the air conditioner but wanted to check. I saw a pipe where such condensation should probably come out but the water was dripping from around an access hatch closer to the building. I opened the hatch to find half an inch of water on the bottom inside the duct. This is not a good thing as there is a blower motor mounted inside this same duct.
