Subject: 30Jun00 51726 SDSS Night Log Date: Sat, 1 Jul 2000 04:49:56 -0600 (MDT) From: sjnk@apo.nmsu.edu (Scot Kleinman) Friday Jun 30 2000 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51726) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Atsuko Nitta Kleinman (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) Bing Chen (JHU) PT VISITORS: ========= THE PLAN: ========= Wait out the weather and try imager calibrations with Mamoru/JB's document. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Clouds, rain, lightning, and fog. Never opened. Tried to get imager calibrations and spent a few hours getting part of column1 data for r'. Suspect something is awry in the scripts. Could someone please have a look at the /data/photo/doi/calibdata directroy and see if we have a resonable set of files there compared to what we are supposed to get for an efficient calibration sequence (which this was not)? TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Stowed at 30deg with a spectro cartridge 7 mounted. DIMM: ----- Not operational. INTERLOCKS: =========== Rail e-stops bypassed. SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_17_1 Watcher: v2_8_2 MCP: v4_3_1 TPM: v1_2_1 AstroDa: 14_29 TCC: 2.3.1 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= crappy. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Sorry Jim, we forgot to copy your U2 frames from last night before doing a poolInit, but the biases from tonight at the beginning of 1566 should be in /data/photo/doi/calibdata. (I think Mamoru's scripts do a poolInit, so the biases from this afternoon's run 1565 were gone when I thought about transferring those instead.) We took a new bias drift towards the end of the night and transferred some of those frames though to /data/photo/optics/u2-jeg. Details about the calibration attempts are in the Imaging section below. endNight -doTpm asked questions about runs to archive and did stuff with the tapes; I thought it was only supposed to copy log files. Is this a bug for a PR or a feature? Otherwise, endNight -doTpm did finish. DATA ACQUISITION (see IOP/SOP output below): =========================================== IMAGING: -------- Run Type --- ---- 1565 bias enclosure lights off; gloves over the flashing light and E-stop. MCP laptop covered with black cloth, MSP laptop lid partially closed so screen is not illuminated: 1566/1 goStare 0 -init 1566/2 goStare 0 -dark -flavor engineering -strip "100,O" -comment "bias" data copied to /data/photo/doi/calibdata 1566/* r' calibrations stage at r': 14837 instead of 14820 after image idR-1566-r1-14.fit was taken, IOP apparently hung. I killed a process as Mamoru describes, but I wasn't sure if it was the right one or not (none looked like that which he described.) It looks like the process recovered, but it may have started over at that point. IOP hung and the telnet connection was lost several times during column 1 r filter tests. We followed Mamoru's document and recovered every time. IOP seemed to be in an infinite loop, going from 550nm 5s back to the top of the temp.list I made following Mamoru's instructions. After 550 5 was an entry of 550 -30. I don't know what this was supposed to do, but it looks like it sent it to the top of the list, so we deleted that entry finally and carried on with the last one which was 550 0. I see there were other -30 entries that went ok (presumably), but it was 1:00 by this time and it would have been nice to finish this before the night's over. I have little confidence the proper files were taken. It seemed to take an extraordinary long time and did not seem the images taken were corresponding to what was in our temp.list file. Can someone take a look and see if we ended up with approximately what we supposed to end up with? Lightning started at 01:15 15 miles away, so we stopped and shut down the apparatus. Weather Tap continued to show nearby lightning and we took no further data. We made notes on parts of Mamoru's documents to help clarify things and make things that didn't work as advertised (mspSend -echo QUIT, for example) which we'll forward to either Jon or Mamoru later.
