SYNOPSIS: ========= We opened shortly before 01:30 once storms passed. Completed plate 349. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Opening was delayed by clouds, and a rather impressive group of thunderstorms which moved through between 21:00 and 23:00. We opened at about 01:30 and decided to see if we could get cartridge 8 349. It was past the time for the focal plane mapping plate and we all agreed that it seemed a better use of telescope time to get useful science data rather than use the telescope time to find out how long the focal plane mapping procedure takes and end up with no useful data. Cartridge 8 had some exposures from a week ago. Since the spectrographs had been adjusted for wavelength coverage and focus, we decided to be safe and take enough integrations tonight to declare it done on tonight's data alone. The data taken only had one frame with wrong number of pix ( row 160 of 4322 ). As a bonus, since we ended up with about 20 minutes of time before twilight when we had made the (S/N)^2 goal we took an additional exposure. The result is that the minimum (S/N)^2 for any given camera is over 100. After a partly cloudy afternoon, skies began clouding up around sunset and a very strong storm moved in from the NW bringing frequent lightning ( thankfully mostly cloud to cloud ), and very strong winds. Around 01:00 skies began clearing. It was mostly clear from about 2:00 on with variable seeing.
