Subject: 25Jun00 51721 SDSS Night Log Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 04:45:29 -0600 (MDT) From: sjnk@apo.nmsu.edu (Scot Kleinman) Sunday, June 25, 2000 Apache Point Observatory SDSS 2.5m Observing Log (MJD 51721) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Ellyne Kinney (APO) Atsuko Nitta Kleinman (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) French Leger (APO) --via phone Craig Loomis (APO) Bing Chen (JHU) PT VISITORS: ========= Douglas Finkbeinder (UC) Jim Gunn (PU) --via phone David Hogg (IAS) French Leger (APO) --via phone Russell Owen (UW) --via phone David Schlegel (PU) THE PLAN: ========= Hartmann testing (again) if the weather cooperates. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== 1.5 (unbinned) Hartmann tests done. Partly cloudy most of the night. Hopefully the signal to noise will be adequate. Jim Gunn, please contact APO day staff about whether or not to remove the Hartmann screen. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= Telescope at stow, 30degrees altitude, eng cam installed. A/C system in "auto" mode. INTERLOCKS: =========== None bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_17_0 Watcher: v2_8_2 MCP: v4_3_1 TPM: v1_2_0 AstroDa: 14_30 TCC: 2.3.1 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Rain in the afternoon. Partly cloudy most of the night, but otherwise OK. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Before Dark: When I came in this afternoon the A/C was 'on' but not running. I checked with Norm and he told be that he checked the coils and that there was a bit of frost on them, but they were "not iced up like they were the other day". After some phone calls I was able to get a hold of Carlos and he suggested turning the A/C off for 10 seconds and turning it back on. This worked and the A/C was back on. We noticed that the temperature dropped 7F in 15 minutes. By 6pm the temperature was ~63F. We called French and found the thermocouple and set it up on the telescope, so that one lead was on the PMSS and the second lead is in the air. It has been programmed to printout the temperatures once every 10 minutes. If you hit the on/off button it will erase the program. The manual is next to the laptop if you need it. The thermocouple is taped to the telescope just behind the laptop. I checked the altitude ranges from 6-90 degrees and made sure the lead on the PMSS would not pull out and that the thermocouple would not hit the spotting telescope. All clearances look OK. Recording was started at 19:30. We have the printout from this recording available on request. Basically, the two temperatures were nearly equal and were between 61 and 63 degrees F all night. During afternoon instrument checkout we discovered that we could not grabInst. We tried logging into the spectro terminal server and could not. We put a call in to Craig, he was back at home at 8:30pm and we tried to diagnose the problem over the phone without luck. Craig is coming to try and swap out the terminal server. Note: Craig took a look at the murmur log to try and see exactly when the terminal server went down. Since we save the murmur logs at the end of the night, but restart them at the beginning of the shift, we are missing the relevant portions of the murmur log. Maybe cleanupMurmur should be run by endNight??? We also discovered during the afternoon check that we could not talk to the secondary galils. We did a 'mirror status sec' through the TCC. The first time we got some numbers. The second time we tried the command we never got a response and had to ^C out. We were able to host in from the TCC though. We tried a telstop/telrun and we could then then check mirror status for the secondary. Why did this work???? TPM automatic logging is not working again. When we tried to start it manually, the log was created in the directory 51726, but today's MJD is 51721! After dark: Craig bypassed the bad Xyplex and got the eng cam to be online again. A by-product is we have no communication with the spectrographs, but we filled them at 23:00 and aren't planning on using them tonight. Craig will replace the Xyplex and put things right tomorrow. Hartmann Tests: --------------- All Hartmann images in /data/spectro/hartmann2 on sdsshost. The following are the list of image numbers (file name is gimgxxxx.fits). Parameters listed outside the group of image numbers remain until indicated otherwise. Where we have multiple images at the same r and rotation value with a (~centering) comment, it means we had to move the image around to get it all to fit nicely on the chip. The last image in each sequence, therefore, should be the best centered. endNight -doTpm ran successfully tonight.
