Date: Fri, 5 May 2000 07:17:47 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 000504 (MJD 51669) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 04 2000 (MJD 51669) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Scot Kleinman (APO) (first half) Atsuko Nitta Kleinman (APO) (first half) Dan Long (APO) (second half) Steph Snedden (APO) (second half) Eric Neilsen (JHU) PT VISITORS: ========= Jim Annis (FNAL) - by phone THE PLAN: ========= Image 11S if clear and good seeing. Spectro otherwise with an emphasis on doing the plate and/or chunk we couldn't see stars in the other night. SYNOPSIS: ========= Imaging 11,S with good to great seeing and clear skies. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== During the endDrift of our initial bias run, we got an error about makeRunLog. See problems below. We setup before twilight and started a FASTT field, but did not know how to charge this in Titrax, so we left paused until twilight. (Also, what flavor is a FASTT field?) The autoLskips for run 1462 were 0.024, -0.009, -0.003, and 0.015 so we made no correction and kept going. We called Jim Annis after problems started mounting up. 1) endDrift couldn't make the runLog, 2) the watcher had no fwhm, run, frame, etc. information, and 3) the endDrift of run 1461 ended on frames 88 for dewars 1-4 and 89 for 5-6. These were symptoms of no idAstroline files being written, which was itself caused by a very sluggish rate of gang transfers. Whatever was causing the slow down even caused endDrift's commands to be received slowly enough in the DA that the nodes didn't all stop on the same frame. All these problems ( which apparently started with run 1459, just as suddenly disappeared when run 1462 started ). Run 1462 went smoothly from lambda -55 to about +44. Skies were clear, and seeing was excellent, running from .95 to 1.25 most of the time in i'. Unfortunately the run was stopped short of the end of the stripe because the rotator stopped tracking. It complained that it hit a limit. However it wasn't even close. It stopped at 44.95 ( only 45 deg from its nominal center position of +90! ). It would not init, nor could and amp reset-stop-hold clear it. After pressing a stop button and thinking a bit on what to do, we released the button, did an axis init from the TCC and we were back on line. Curiously, during this time the interlocks display was showing all green on all axes. The watcher displayed the following error message. See PR mcp/1022 mcpMapProc2 axes|rotator::MGT: bad rot state ABORT_EVENT: ID_ERROR_LIMIT (May 05 04:09:44):: With only half an hour before twilight, we decided not to resume 11,S, and instead did FASTT field M in about 1.1 arcsec seeing. At the end of the run, out of focus images were taken at both +300 and -300.
