GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Before Dark: First day since the beginning of the dark run when the servers were still up when I came to work in the afternoon. Watcher was throwing "no udp packet" errors. After asking about it to Connie, I started an TCC telrun session. Watcher stopped complaining. Why does the DA want to talk to TCC while we are not observing? A nuit: Started with Cart 2/ plate 338. Offsets are: (-0.006, 0.002) Focus was set to -350, scale = 0.99988. Seeing on the order of 2 - 2.5'' as wind is from S/SE. On the 4th science integration, the focus was changed to -100. Cart 5/ plate 347 put on at 00:25. We could find an FK5 star no problem, but we could not find any of the guide stars in the field, after multiple attempts. We zeroed out the offsets in the TCC, without success, and tried a number of times to acquire the field. At about 01:10 Ellyne lost her "sop" session -- and had to start from scratch. We had to log out the spectro ports by hand when "sop" disappeared. At this point as well, the TCC became very slow -- it appeared that a dead "sop to TCC" communication session was still active and so we started to kill processes on the VMS side. This we did and still could not find stars in the fibers. At this point we decided that we should try refiducializing the axes, in case we were getting cumulative position errors. The AZ fiducial changed by 4''. At this point we decided to try our luck going back to the field. The TCC behaved as expected in this case and we found guide stars! So it appears that we had an AZ fiducial positional error. From here we proceeded to try and do science for this plate. However, by the time we had everything back up and running, and had taken the preCalibs, it was 02:30 and the field was beyond optimum. We changed to Cart 6 / plate 347 at 02:35. We slewed to field right away, did not find anything in the fibres, then did an "fk5InFiber"; found a star, and using the offsets (0.001, -0.0015) managed to get guide stars in the fibres when we went back to the field. The science/calibrations went uneventfully and we declared the plate done. We closed up at 05:00. endNight was run successfully. Tapes to ship: JL 2897.
