Imaging if clear with good seeing, otherwise spectroscopy. Focal plane mapping the last part of the night if posssible. SYNOPSIS: ========= Started with imager. Seeing was marginal... wind changed to SE and got worse.... back to spectroscopy. Finished plates 344 and 346. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Before dark: Connie continues her work with the imager. The first spectro bias image in the afternoon showed many red lines ( missing pixels). Prompted by Connie's email, I went down to check if sp2's SCSI and DP-9 cable were loose. (I called Connie to make sure which cables to check.) They looked fine and felt fine when gently touched. We took few bias frames to see if the red lines (missing pixels) return. Once Connie was done testing, we put in tapes into the archiver and started a bias frame. It started without any problem, but stopped after one frame (run 1524). We restarted another goDrift -bias without an endDrift to specifically end 1524, and it started drifting and ended after one frame (1525). This time we issued an endDrift command and it asked me for the normal questions as if we were still running bias run 1525. We tried this few times. We called Ron at home and he helped figure the problem out. Apparently every time a goDrift was issued, there was a readout stop command issued so that it will stop doing the drift. This apparently came from Connie's code earlier today. Once we killed the "job" issuing the readout end command, we were able to start the drift and end when we wished. 1530 is a successful bias frame. We asked Ron to write up how he found out what was wrong so that if this happens in the future we can do it ourselves. French came in for a while early in the night and I demonstrated the vibration which occurs when slewing in azimuth and rotator simultaneously when the altitude is at 90. See PR servo/904 for more discussion of the problem. Once it was dark and the "dueling iops" were sorted, we started a drift on stripe 12 N at lambda -20. The seeing was marginal even after the setup was complete. We decided to give it half an hour or so to equilibrate since the 3.5m was getting around 1.2". During that time the wind switched to the SE and the seeing got much worse. So we went to spectroscopy, making the change around 22:30. We also decided not to send the tapes to Fermilab, however the data is still on the pool if Connie wants to look at it. There are a couple sop things I've noticed over the last few nights. First is that the TCC never receives a track command from the first gotoField -gflat issued from a given sop session. See PR sop/1085 The second is that guiderFocus processes a maximum of 5 unique frames. If you ask for more than that, you get frame 5 repeated. The guider is taking all the frames requested and the TCC is adjusting focus between each one, it is just that the routine appears to stop looking at the new frames. See PR sop/1086 When we reset the fiducials between cartridge 9 and 6, there was a large azimuth error, on the order of 20 arcminutes. On the second try, the error was essentially equal and opposite. This is similar to the event on the night of the 24th described in PR 1077. We had several occurrences of wrong number of pixels from spectrograph 2 which was mentioned by Steph in PR 1083. Sometimes up to a dozen in a single frame. A check of the cabling suggested by Connie, showed everything in place. Reseating the connectors didn't seem to have any effect, though the randomness of the error made us think so for a while. We did plate 344 between 23:00 and 01:30 and plate 346 for the rest of the night. We decided to continue on and finish plate 346 since the poor seeing was demanding additional exposures, rather than leave it short of signal to noise and switch to focal plane mapping in poor seeing ( Sorry Andy ).
