Winds from E. Poor seeing until 03:30, then moderately poor seeing. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Afternoon checkout went smoothly, except for the archiver (see problems). We started Cartridge 2, plate 339 at 14 degree twilight. There was no excessive sky background in the guider images and "Son of Spectro" gave the following sky values: SKY/SEC b1 r1 b2 r2 0.15 0.38 0.17 0.31 The next exposure, well after 15 deg twilight gave these sky values: 0.13 0.36 0.15 0.30 It looks like it may be safe to start at 15 degree twilight. We finished plate 339 in four exposures, and declared it done. Fiducials were set between each cartridge change. Results are in the "Data Acquisition" section. Cartridge 5, plate 343 was next. Seeing was very bad and we needed a total of 8 900s integrations. During one image we noticed WRONG num of pix error messages on both cameras of spectrograph 2. The errors ocurred for most of the night...starting at 22:21:51 and suddenly stopping at 04:18:17. A PR was filed (Problems section). This plate was declared done. The last cartridge of the night was cartridge 8, plate 349. While mounting this cartridge, we tried an experiment. Rather than slew to instrument change using "instChange", which usually put us at alt=90 deg well before azimuth & rotator motion has stopped, we held the altitude at about 60 degrees while slewing to az=121 deg, then raised the alt to instrument change. We did this because we get a known loud vibration when the az and rot axes are moving at alt=90 deg, and we wonder if this affects our subsequent pointing. Indeed, all the fiducial errors were under 2 arcsec, however, more trials need to be made, as this is a negative test. (We have also seen small errors after the telescope was vibrating). We were unable to reach our target (S/N)^2 by twilight, so this plate was not declared done. A note regarding Titrax: Rich is interested in efficiency after astronomical twilight. Tonight, we only assigned time to a category when the activity occurred between twilights. If this is not what is desired, all of the observers need to know. We used the "how to recover from two tape drive failure" to try to recover the archivers. This did not recover the tape drives status of "Tape or Drive failure". So we called Ron. He suggested we use the "Handling a non-responsive archiver" procedure. After following the procedure, we got id4-2 and id5-1 back archiving, but not id4-1 and id5-2. We did yet another "Handling a non-responsive archiver" and put in new tapes to id4-2 and id5-1. This made all the drives in id4 and id5 happy. SPECTROGRAPHS: -------------- During the data acquisition for Cartridge 5, We saw two horizontal lines of missing pixels across both cameras on the sp2 monitors. An inspection of the images (4070, r2 & b2) does indeed show two missing pixels in two different rows. They show up in the spectra as a horizontal offset of 2 pix in the row. A PR was filed (1083). A look at the murmur log shows this was happening pretty regularly, but since the monitors don't display a complete image, we were not seeing some of them. At the very end of the night log, I've pasted the murmur log entries. The problem started about one hour after we started taking data...it was not with us at the beginning, and got worse toward the end, with more rows showing the wrong num of pix...always 2126 instead of 2128 pix. This looks like a hardware problem. Spectrograph 1 always appeared to be fine. At 04:18, the problem suddenly stoppped, and the final few images were clean.
