Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 05:47:48 -0600 From: Dan Long Subject: 2.5m obslog 20000526 (MJD 51691) APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday May 26 2000 (MJD 51691) OBSERVING TEAM: =============== Atsuko Nitta Kleinman (APO) Scot Kleinman (APO) Steph Snedden (APO) Dan Long (APO) VISITORS: ========= Connie Rockosi (UC) remotely THE PLAN: ========= Science ( Imaging is now also an option ). Focal plane mapping with cart.7 plate 183 if photometric and the seeing is <1.5". SYNOPSIS: ========= Spectroscopy: Cartridge 2, plate 340 Cartridge 4, plate 342 Cartridge 8, plate 350 Once again, focal plane mapping was not done due to poor seeing. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Connie continues her work. She has not see the u2 behave badly and during the phonecon, it was decided that we will do imaging if the sky condition allows and Connie is not using the imager for any further testing. Before Dark: MCP was rebooted after the day crew finished their testing so that we could run v4_2_4. HVAC did not turn itself on when the exhaust can was turned on. (PR was filed) After Dark: When we started taking guider frames after the first slew, the guider monitor was showing blank frames with all values equal to 75. This persisted for several integration attempts. It was incrementing the frame number each time and was showing the current frame. However, if one displayed the frames by doing a regReadAsFits and saoDisplay, they were normal guider frames. As soon as a gotoField -gflat was issued, the guider monitor started displaying frames properly. Cartridge 2 for the third night in a row seemed to show slightly softer guider frames than other cartridges. Is there some adjustment one can make to cartridge 2 to get the guide fibers in better focus? We took the fiber angles calculated last night for cartridge 4 and edited them into /data/spectro/cartridgeInfo.par. When we started guiding it failed to bring the stars in and a parray gFiber *rot* showed different values than those just added to the cartridgeInfo.par file, and they also weren't the -720 values previous to editing. Could it be that the numbers in the par file are not the raw fiber angles from starPattern? Tonight's cartridge 4 fiber angles from starPattern gFiber(gprobe,1,rot) = -28.02669964009948 gFiber(gprobe,10,rot) = 28.739914635156694 gFiber(gprobe,11,rot) = 46.05592992685218 gFiber(gprobe,2,rot) = 41.108559121986922 gFiber(gprobe,3,rot) = -720 gFiber(gprobe,4,rot) = -720 gFiber(gprobe,5,rot) = -720 gFiber(gprobe,6,rot) = -93.826535416414259 gFiber(gprobe,7,rot) = -108.11947964253045 gFiber(gprobe,8,rot) = -168.63480525312403 gFiber(gprobe,9,rot) = -61.463848858732284 With rather variable seeing, plates took longer than normal to reach (S/N)**2 of 80 (5 or 6 900s instead of the usual 4). Twice we ended up taking another science exposure after the diamond points. Rather than wait for the Son-of-Spectro results we started the calibrations. Someone from the reduction team should let us know if this is a problem for them. We declared 3 plates done tonight 340, 342, and 350. We decided not to attempt the focal plane mapping with seeing bouncing between 1.7 and 2.6 arcseconds.
