Focal plane mapping with cart.7 when the moon is up, providing the seeing is good. SYNOPSIS FOR NIGHT: =================== Spectroscopy: Cartridge 2, plate 341 Cartridge 4, plate 306 Cartridge 6, plate 345 Focal plane mapping was not done because of seeing > 1.5 arcsec. TELESCOPE STATUS: ================= The telescope was left in the enclosure at an altitude of 30 degrees, with cartrtidge 1 mounted. INTERLOCKS: =========== none bypassed SOFTWARE USED: ============== IOP/SOP: v3_16_2 Watcher: v2_8_2 MCP: v4_2_4 TPM: v1_0_8 AstroDa: 14_28 TCC: 2.2.9 WEATHER SYNOPSIS (see below for hourly data): ============================================= Clear. Winds out of the west. GENERAL COMMENTS (see Problems below for details): ================================================== Connie continues her work with the imager. Before Dark: iop v3_16_2 was declared current. MCP was rebooted after French and his crew were done testing with the special version of MCP. A small piece of cloth was blown out from the south side of the rail as we moved the enclosure. I hope that is the last of the red cloth that got stuck in the rail. There was no problem getting the enclosure off the scope. Around 20:30, Dan tried to take a bias with the spectro but instead of getting a bias, we were given many critical errors from the watcher saying, vm3,ad3,dsc_E_trcErr fatal - _PutFrameData status=0x8000c434 sp1Da etc etcetc We did not know this was caused by the server's death, and thought that it was a spectro crate problem. We decided to reboot the spectro crate. We called Ron before doing so, but he was not home yet, so we went ahead and did it without his supervision. This did not clear the critical error messages from the watcher, but Dan was able to take a bias image. But when he then tried to do grabInstruments -handlers, it failed and this is when we found the death of the server. After restarting the server, the critical error beeping stopped. We have no idea why the server died on us. After Dark: Spectroscopy: Before each new cartridge, fiducials were set. Offsets were determined, and we then had no trouble getting stars down fibers. We started preCalibs at 15 degree twilight on cartridge 2, plate 341. Seeing was not-so-good according to the guidercam...about 2 arcsec. DIMM was showing much better seeing of 0.8-1.0 arcsec. A look at the guider flats shows that the fibers are a little out of focus. The FWHM values we are getting may reflect this. SPICAM was getting 0.9 arcsec. We took four exposures and declared this plate done. Next was cartridge 4, plate 306. This cartridge does not have known fiber angles, so a starPattern and computeFiberAngles was done before and after the science exposures. Unfortunately, it appears that fiber 3 is missing, so this all may have to be done again. The fiber angles are listed below. We noted that the guider flats appeared to be in better focus, however the FWHMs are still larger than DIMM. Visually, the seeing appeared worse than 1 arcsec. We took 4 science exposures and declared this plate done. Last, we did cartridge 6, plate 345. The moon was rising as we started, but since this plate already has two exposures, we decided to go ahead and get three more, declare it done, and let the Spectro folks decide if the moonlight is a problem. Guide fibers appeared to be in focus on this cartridge as well. We decided against doing the focal plane mapping, as the seeing was greater than 1.5 arcsec. Cartridge 5, which was done last night, was declared done in the database.
